The much-anticipated debut of Sayali Satghare in India’s opening ODI against Ireland lived up to expectations as the seam-bowling all-rounder showcased her talent on the international stage.
At just 24 years old, Satghare’s journey from Mumbai’s domestic circuit to earning the prestigious Indian ODI cap was marked by grit and determination.
Ireland posted a competitive 238/7 in their 50 overs, with Satghare making a mark by dismissing Arlene Kelly for her maiden international wicket. Her disciplined bowling kept Ireland in check, providing the breakthrough India needed to curtail their opponents’ momentum.
In response, India chased down the target comfortably, thanks to Pratika Rawal’s commanding knock of 89 off 96 balls and Tejal Hasabnis’ unbeaten 53 off 46 balls.
Satghare’s presence bolstered the team, and her calm demeanor on debut reflected her readiness for international cricket. Her rise to the Indian team is rooted in her consistent performances at the domestic level.
In the Senior Women’s ODI Trophy in January 2024, she scored 260 runs at an average of 52 and claimed 10 wickets in seven matches. Her bowling prowess continued to shine as she bagged 17 wickets in December 2024, finishing as the eighth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Her talent was recognized by the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, where she served as a concussion substitute for Dayalan Hemalatha in a match against the Delhi Capitals. Despite limited opportunities, her potential was undeniable, leading the Giants to retain her for INR 10 lakh ahead of the WPL 2025 auction.
This series against Ireland offers a platform for emerging players like Satghare to showcase their abilities. With Renuka Singh Thakur rested, Satghare has already proven herself a valuable asset in India’s seam attack.
As India continues the series, Sayali Satghare’s debut marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting international journey. India next faces Ireland on January 12th on the same venue.
