The Nepal Under-19 Women’s team led by skipper Puja Mahato scripted history when they defeated the potential tournament favorites United Arab Emirates (UAE) led by skipper Samaira Dharnidharka by 8 wickets in the decider game of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup Asia Qualifier in UAE.
A comprehensive victory meant they surpassed the UAE, courtesy of a superior net run rate to top the table with 10 points. As a result of their top-of-the-table finish, they booked their spot for a maiden appearance in the upcoming 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Malaysia and Thailand.
The Nepal under-19 women’s team received a royal welcome on their return back home from the UAE.
To celebrate the significant achievement of the Under-19 side, all 8 Nepal Premier League (NPL) teams, a domestic men’s franchise tournament in Nepal – namely Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos, Janakpur Bolts, Karnali Yaks, Kathmandu Gurkhas Lumbini Lions, Pokhara Avengers, and Sudurpaschim Royals – are joining forces to grant NPR (Nepalese Rupee) 1 Million as a gesture of appreciation for their historic triumph in the UAE.
India are currently the defending champions, on the virtue of being the inaugural winners of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup, hosted by South Africa last year. The upcoming 2nd edition of the tournament will take place in Malaysia and Thailand.
A total of 16 teams namely, India, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, USA, West Indies, hosts, Malaysia and Nepal will be participating in the 2nd edition. The tournament will commence on 18th January 2025 and conclude on 2nd February 2025.
