Cricket South Africa announces nominees for the Women’s Player of the Year 2024

On Wednesday, August 7, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the nominees for the annual CSA Awards, which will be held on September 5 at Vodaworld in Midrand. The nominees for the Women’s Player of the Year award are Nadine de Klerk, Marizanne Kapp, Masabata Klaas, and Laura Wolvaardt, with the award based on performances from the 2023/2024 season.

This year’s event, themed ‘The Art of Cricket,’ is inspired by the ‘Be Part Of It’ campaign, celebrating the passion and artistry that have kept cricket vibrant in South Africa throughout the season. Under Laura Wolvaardt’s leadership, the Proteas Women had a promising run in her debut season as captain across all formats.

During the 2023-2024 season:

All-rounder Marizanne Kapp played 22 T20I matches, scoring 472 runs and taking 15 wickets. She also participated in 1 Test match, accumulating 105 runs. In ODIs, she featured in 17 matches, where she scored 689 runs and claimed 10 wickets.

Nadine de Klerk has played 26 T20I matches, scoring 250 runs and taking 15 wickets. In 2 Test matches, she accumulated 105 runs and claimed 3 wickets. Additionally, in 17 ODI matches, she scored 356 runs and took 24 wickets.

Masabata Klaas, right-arm medium bowler, participated in 5 T20I matches, taking 4 wickets. In 2 Test matches, she claimed 3 wickets, and in 8 ODI matches, she secured 9 wickets.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt played 27 T20I matches, amassing 897 runs. She scored 154 runs across 2 Test matches and 955 runs in 18 ODI matches.

The ceremony will also recognize standout players in domestic cricket, with new categories introduced for women’s cricket following its promotion to Division 1. The nominees were chosen by a distinguished panel, including Crystal Arnold, Firdose Moonda, Patrick Moroney, Ashwell Prince, and Khanyiso Tshwaku, with statistical input from Andrew Samson.

The awards will be preceded by an annual golf day on September 4 at Soweto Golf Club and a KFC Mini-Cricket Community activation event in Soweto.

CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki expressed enthusiasm for the CSA Awards, highlighting them as a key event in the cricketing calendar that celebrates the talent and dedication of players at both domestic and international levels.

Moseki expressed, “The CSA Awards are a highlight of our cricketing calendar. They provide us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the immense talent and dedication of our players, both at the domestic and international levels.”

He emphasized that the introduction of new categories for women’s domestic cricket marks a significant advancement in promoting and professionalizing the women’s game, allowing for the recognition of outstanding female cricketers who inspire future generations.

“The introduction of new categories for women’s domestic cricket is a significant step forward in our commitment to promoting and professionalising the women’s game. We are proud to recognise the outstanding performances of our female cricketers who continue to inspire the next generation,” he said.

Moseki also noted that this year’s theme, “The Art of Cricket,” reflects the beauty and passion that players and administrators bring to the sport, and he looks forward to honoring them on September 5.

“This year’s theme, ‘The Art of Cricket,’ perfectly encapsulates the beauty and passion that our players and administrators bring to the game, and we look forward to honouring them on 05 September,” concluded Moseki.
