India claimed three penalty corners in the first quarter but failed to convert them into goals and then in the first minute of the second quarter, India’s Amit Rohidas was handed a red card, which meant the Men in Blue had to play with only 10 men throughout the match. However, things got better as Harmanpreet Singh, in the 22nd minute, gave India the lead via a penalty corner before Great Britain’s equalizer in the 27th minute.

The match went to a penalty shootout as neither team could take the lead from one each. Both India and Great Britain began the shootout neck-and-neck, with the scores leveled at 2-2 before Connor Williamson fired his shot wide, resulting in India taking the lead, and PR Sreejesh made a crucial save against Phillip Roper. PR Sreejesh was one of the stars of the match, making multiple saves in regulation time and then forcing two misses from Great Britain in the shootout. India is not set to face Germany in the semi-final.

Following India’s win, Indian women’s cricketers praised the Indian men’s hockey team. Former Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami hailed the side for their display, even after being a man down in the 16th minute, and specifically praised PR Sreejesh for his defense in the penalty shootouts. Anjum Chopra expressed her wishes through a tweet, acknowledging the calmness India showed in a knockout game.
