“By the Asia Cup, we should be ready for the World Cup.” Head coach Amol Muzumdar speaks about team India’s preparation for the T20 World Cup in October this year.
The Women in Blue were last involved in a white-ball away series that included a five-match T20I series against Bangladesh in April 2024. India inflicted a thrashing whitewash against the Nigar Sultana-led side. As far as the ODIs are concerned, the women in blue were last involved in a three-match ODI series against Australia at home in December 2023, where they suffered a heartbreaking white-wash. However, in the same series, they scripted history by defeating Australia for the first time in the red-ball format.
The Indian women’s team led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is all-set to host South Africa led by skipper Laura Wolvaardt for an all-format series as their next assignment. The home series includes a three-match ODI series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, followed by a one-off Test match, and then a three-match T20I series at the MA. Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, in Chennai. The series will get underway on 16th June 2024 and will conclude on 9th July 2024.
“That continuity is very important in the few months leading up to the World Cup. In this series, the format that we are playing is the ODI format first, then the Test match and then the last one is T20I. So, it is a very well-scheduled series. We are going to the Asia Cup, which is again T20Is. So, by the Asia Cup, we should be ready for the World Cup. Then we have a lay-off of about 7-7.5 weeks before we head off to Bangladesh.” Indian women’s team head coach Amol Muzumdar speaks about the importance of the upcoming series, followed by the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka being an ideal scenario in terms of preparations for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
We are inching closer and closer to the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, hosted by Bangladesh, from 3rd October 2024 to 20th October 2024. “Definitely, batting is our strength. But not to forget that bowling has always won us the game. So, it’s a mix of both departments and fielding is something I have always mentioned about it as a work in progress and we are working very hard towards it. Trust me, you will see some results out of it.” Head coach Amol Muzumdar speaks about putting in the hard yards, especially in the fielding department.
With the conditions on offer in Bangladesh having some sort of similarity to the Indian conditions, all eyes would be on the Women in Blue’s performances in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
