Every year the Arjuna Awards are given to honor excellence in sports by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. In 2018, women’s cricket team star opener Smriti Mandhana was the only cricketer to receive the prestigious award.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on 27th April 2019, recommended women’s team leg-spinner Poonam Yadav for the Arjuna Award 2019. According to IANS, the supreme court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) met in New Delhi to discuss the names. GM Cricket Operations Saba Karim proposed the names of four cricketers and Yadav is one among them.

Of late, Poonam Yadav has been a consistent performer for the Indian women’s cricket team. She made her debut for the Indian team in April 2013 in T20I against Bangladesh. As of now, she has taken 140 international wickets and has taken four 4-wicket hauls in ODIs and two in T20Is.
