The Indian women’s cricket team had a memorable year in 2023 starting with a semi-final finish in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 in South Africa, courtesy of another heart-breaking 5-run defeat against Australia in the knockout stages. Before the T20I World Cup, the young brigade of the women in blue led by skipper Shafali Verma was crowned as the inaugural champions of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, adding India’s maiden title to the trophy cabinet.
The Indian team also clinched a historic gold medal in their maiden attempt at the Asian Games by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. As far as the red-ball format is concerned, the Indian team under the leadership and guidance of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and newly appointed head coach Amol Muzumdar sealed a historic 347 runs victory over England, their maiden victory against England at home. It was followed by another historic achievement in the red-ball format as they defeated Australia for the first time with an 8-wicket victory in a one-off Test match at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
The Indian women’s cricket team recently hosted Australia for an all-format series. The women in blue will be having a break in their International calendar and will be back on the field in September, later this year for the Women’s Asia Cup that is most likely to be played in the T20I format, considering the year being a T20I World Cup year.
Besides the 2nd edition of the Women’s Premier League and the fag end of the ’23/24 domestic season, there could be a lead-up series ahead of the Asia Cup.
The Indian team will then proceed to host South Africa for a three-match T20I series. Both the Asia Cup and the bilateral series against South Africa will act as a dress rehearsal, just before the ICC Women’s T20I World Cup in Bangladesh in September-October, later this year. Our superwomen in blue would be keen to go one step further in an ICC event to get their hands on their maiden, much-awaited senior competition ICC title.
After the conclusion of the T20I World Cup in Bangladesh, India will host New Zealand for a white-ball series that will include a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series in October. Despite India’s 2 Test wins in two weeks, they’ve not got a Test listed, but there could well be one against New Zealand, who would want to get back to red-ball cricket, and what better than doing so against India.
India will proceed on a tour to Australia for a three-match ODI series in December this year. After their tour to Australia, they will then host West Indies for a white-ball series that will include a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series against West Indies in December to end the year. India will then host Ireland followed by South Africa for a three-match ODI series in January, early next year in 2025.
