Chamari Athapaththu signed up by Northern Brave for the Women’s Super Smash 2023-24 season

The Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, over the years, has established herself as one of the best players for Sri Lanka and overall, a legend in the women’s game.

She has also made a mark for herself in franchise leagues around the world. She made her WBBL debut for the Melbourne Renegades in the year 2017. She moved to the Perth Scorchers for the 7th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League in the year 2021. She played 10 matches for the franchise and scored 182 runs at a strike rate of 117.41 and an impressive average of 30.33.

The Sri Lankan skipper and star all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu initially went unsold in the inaugural overseas draft that took place on 3rd September 2023 in Melbourne. However, the Sydney Thunder led by skipper Heather Knight, eventually drafted her into the squad for the 9th edition of the WBBL. She immediately found her way into the playing 11 for the Sydney Thunder. She has scored 451 runs so far at a strike rate of 134.62 and an impressive average of 45.10.

Her best performance with the bat so far this season came on 26th October 2023 against the Melbourne Renegades when she scored 80 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.14. Her tally of runs included 13 boundaries and a couple of maximums. Apart from her exploits with the bat, she has also picked up 8 wickets at a strike rate of 21.6 and an average of 23.50 in 11 innings. Her best performance (3/20) with the ball this season came on 22nd October 2023 against the Sydney Sixers.

After being in the middle of an impressive season for the Sydney Thunder in the ongoing 9th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League, she has been signed up by the Northern Brave for the upcoming edition of the Super Smash that will get underway on 19th December 2023.
