Laura Wolvaardt, Rachael Haynes and Sophie Ecclestone nominated for ICC’s Monthly Award

The International Cricket Council on Wednesday announced the nominees for ICC Player of the Month for March 2022. It was a month that saw a thrilling display of cricket by the eight-strong teams of women’s cricket as they competed to be crowned the Champions at the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup that took place in New Zealand.

From the long list of brilliant performances, 3 players got their names shortlisted for the player of the month award: Champion Australia’s Vice-Captain Rachael Haynes, the young star from South Africa, Laura Wolvaardt, and ODI ranked No.1 bowler England’s Sophie Ecclestone.

Opening the innings for Australia along with the best ODI batter, Alyssa Healy, Rachel Haynes accumulated a massive 497 runs in the 9 World Cup matches she played in the 2022 edition. Her total runs were the 2nd highest runs scored in a single edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup; a list led by her teammate Healy who crossed the 500 runs mark. Haynes’ outstanding knocks consisted of a century and 3 half-centuries with an average of 62.12.

The rising star Laura Wolvaardt was a player to watch out for during the 2022 ODI World Cup. With a half-century in 5 of the 8 matches she played for the Momentum Proteas, Wolvaardt gathered 433 runs at an average of 54.12 with her best knock being 80 (79 balls) that came against India in the team’s last group stage match. Wolvaardt ended her impressive 2022 World Cup campaign as the leading run-scorer for South Africa and the 4th highest in the tournament overall.

Finishing the 2022 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup as the leading wicket-taker, England’s left-arm Spinner Sophie Ecclestone showed some exciting spells with the ball. Her record-breaking spell included her career-best figure of 6/36 in the Sem-Finals against South Africa as she took a total of 21 wickets in 9 matches which is the highest number of wickets ever taken by an English Woman in a single edition of ICC ODI World Cup.
