Perth Scorchers’ Chloe Tryon Opts Out of WBBL 11; Freya Kemp Named Replacement

The Perth Scorchers have officially announced the signing of Freya Kemp, a talented 20-year-old all-rounder from England, for the upcoming 11th season of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Kemp will be joining the squad as a replacement for Chloe Tryon, who had to withdraw due to national commitments.

As a left-handed batter and left-arm medium pacer, Kemp has risen through the ranks, playing for Sussex, Southern Vipers, and Southern Brave. Her exceptional performances in domestic cricket caught the attention of national selectors, and by the age of 17, she earned her first call-up to represent England, showcasing her remarkable talent and potential.

She made her international debut in July 2022 during a T20I series against South Africa. Later that year, she also played in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against India, proving herself with both bat and ball. Despite facing a setback early in her career with a back stress fracture, Kemp showed great resilience and made a successful return to competitive cricket, solidifying her reputation as one of the most exciting young all-rounders in the women’s game.

One of Kemp’s standout moments came during a T20I match against India in 2022 when she scored an impressive 51 not out, earning widespread praise and demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure. Her combination of hard-hitting batting and effective left-arm seam bowling makes her a valuable addition to any team.

In terms of recent form, Kemp has been on fire. During the 2025 Women’s One-Day Cup, she scored 298 runs in just six matches, boasting an average of 59.60 and a strike rate of 125.73. These statistics underline her reputation as a game-changer in the short format. Plus, her experience playing alongside Sophie Devine for Southern Brave in The Hundred 2025 will certainly benefit her as she team’s up with the Scorchers captain Devine in WBBL11.

Kade Harvey, the General Manager of High Performance for the Scorchers, expressed his enthusiasm for Kemp’s arrival, mentioning that she was on their radar even before the draft. He praised her batting depth and noted that her aggressive style aligns perfectly with the fast-paced conditions at the WACA Ground. Kemp shared her excitement as well, stating she’s “really looking forward to calling Perth home” and can’t wait to meet her new teammates to help the team’s title ambitions.

The Scorchers gain not just Kemp’s all-around abilities but also her availability for the entire season, which is a significant edge compared to some overseas players constrained by international duties. While Tryon’s absence due to South Africa’s series against Ireland is disappointing, Kemp’s signing brings fresh talent and enthusiasm to the squad at the perfect time.

As WBBL11 gets ready for another thrilling season of women’s cricket, all eyes will be on Freya Kemp in her orange jersey with the Perth Scorchers. Her arrival signals the start of what could be an exciting chapter in her career and a significant boost for the Scorchers’ title ambitions.
