Beth Mooney’s 97 in vain as Georgia Voll’s 97* guides Sydney Thunder to top of WBBL Table

The Brisbane Heat skipper Jess Jonassen’s all-round effort, which also earned her the Player of the Match, played an instrumental role in guiding her side to a much-needed 2nd consecutive victory by 12 runs against the Sydney Sixers at the North Sydney Oval, Sydney in the 26th match of the Women’s Big League (WBBL) 10.

Perth Scorchers led by skipper Sophie Devine were up against Sydney Thunder led by skipper Phoebe Litchfield in a neutral venue at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 27th match of the tournament.

Beth Mooney’s 97, and skipper Sophie Devine’s 44 guided the Perth Scorchers to a competitive total

The Scorchers skipper Sophie Devine opted to bat first after winning the toss. The Perth Scorchers had a quiet powerplay, scoring just 22 runs for the loss of one wicket. Dayalan Hemalatha had a short stay in the middle, without much of an impact, to provide the 2nd breakthrough for the Sydney Thunder.

Skipper Sophie Devine joined wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney at the crease and the duo led a resurgent fightback with a massive 112-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side past the 150-run mark. Taneale Peschel picked up the big scalp of the opposition skipper Sophie Devine to provide the much-needed 3rd breakthrough for her side with 154 on the board.

The Perth Scorchers went on to post a competitive total of 170/5 in their quota of overs. Wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney (97 off 64 balls) missed out on her 4th WBBL century by just three runs. Skipper Sophie Devine (44 off 33 balls), also missed out on her well-deserved half-century by 6 runs. The pair were the two pillars for the Scorchers, accounting for a mind-boggling 83% of the team’s runs. Taneale Peschel (4-0-28-3), and Shabnim Ismail (4-0-21-2), were the star performers with the ball for Sydney Thunder.

Georgia Voll steals the show with a breezy 97* to take the Thunder home in style

The Thunder openers Chamari Athapaththu and Georgia Voll provided them with a good start, chasing a challenging 171-run target. Chamari’s scratchy stay at the crease came to an end courtesy of a run-out, to end the 46-run opening stand. Skipper Phoebe Litchfield smashed a boundary and a maximum before getting dismissed to the opposition skipper Sophie Devine in the 10th over of the run chase.

Georgia Voll was joined by Heather Knight at the crease and the duo took their side closer to the target with a 64-run 3rd wicket partnership. Amy Edgar picked up the wicket of Heather Knight to provide the 3rd breakthrough for the Perth Scorchers. Sydney Thunder eventually got over the line with seven wickets in hand and one over to spare.

Georgia Voll (97* off 56 balls) fell three runs short of her maiden WBBL century. Heather Knight (28 off 24 balls) provided good support to the youngster in the run chase. Amy Edgar (4-0-28-1), Chloe Ainsworth (4-0-25-0), and skipper Sophie Devine (4-0-34-1) were the pick of the bowlers for the Perth Scorchers.

Georgia Voll was awarded the Player of the Match for her sensational innings of 97* off 56 balls with the bat for her side, playing a crucial role in their table-topping victory.
