Perth Scorchers put up all-round effort in a statement win over table-toppers Sydney Thunder

In the 23rd match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), the West Indian duo of skipper Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin powered the Melbourne Renegades to a thumping 9-wicket victory against the Adelaide Strikers. Skipper Hayley Matthews was awarded the Player of the Match for her all-round performance.

Perth Scorchers led by skipper Sophie Devine were all set to face Sydney Thunder led by skipper Phoebe Litchfield at the Drummoyne Oval, Sydney in the 24th match of WBBL 10.

Skipper Sophie Devine and Dayalan Hemalatha power Scorchers past the 170-run mark

Perth Scorchers skipper Sophie Devine won the toss and opted to bat first but lost their wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney courtesy of a run-out in the 2nd over of the innings. Dayalan Hemalatha joined Chloe Piparo at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 31-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to take their side closer to the 50-run mark. Chamari Athapaththu picked up the wicket of Chloe Piparo to provide the 2nd breakthrough for the Sydney Thunder.

Skipper Sophie Devine joined Dayalan Hemalatha at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 36-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side closer to the 100-run mark. Chamari Athapaththu returned and cleaned up Dayalan Hemalatha to provide the 3rd breakthrough for her side. Perth Scorchers eventually ended up with a total of 171/7 in their quota of 20 overs.

The 39-run 5th wicket partnership between Mikayla Hinkley and skipper Sophie Devine was the highest partnership of the innings for the Scorchers. Skipper Sophie Devine (48 off 34 balls), Dayalan Hemalatha (41 off 26 balls), and Mikayla Hinkley (19 off 9 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Perth Scorchers. Shabnim Ismail (4-0-31-2), Chamari Athapaththu (3-0-18-2), and Hannah Darlington (4-0-27-1) were the top performers with the ball for Sydney Thunder.

Pacers, Amy Edgar fold Thunder for 97 as the Scorchers seal a massive victory

Chasing a target of 172, the Sydney Thunder got off to a poor start as they lost both their openers inside the first three overs of the run chase. Heather Knight joined skipper Phoebe Litchfield at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 32-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side closer to the 50-run mark. Amy Edgar picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Phoebe Litchfield to provide the 3rd breakthrough for the Scorchers.

Sydney Thunder kept losing wickets at regular intervals and as a result, they were eventually bundled out for 97 with three balls to spare, falling 74 runs short of the target. Skipper Phoebe Litchfield (27 off 22 balls), and Heather Knight (13 off 19 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Sydney Thunder. Amy Edgar (3.3-0-19-3), Ebony Hoskin (3-0-10-2), Chloe Ainsworth (4-0-15-2), Lilly Mills (3-1-10-1), and Alana King (4-0-18-1) were the top performers with the ball for Perth Scorchers.

Chloe Ainsworth was awarded the Player of the Match for her sensational spell of 4-0-15-2. Perth Scorchers moved to the 2nd spot in the points table courtesy of a massive 74-run victory against the table toppers Sydney Thunder.
