Sri Lankan spinners topple Australia U19 to bow out of the World Cup with a memorable victory

India led by skipper Niki Prasad hammered Scotland by 150 runs to seal a dominating victory in group 1 in the 10th game of the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup 2025. Sri Lanka led by skipper Manudi Nanayakkara faced off against Australia led by skipper Lucy Hamilton in the 12th game at the UKM-YSD Cricket Oval, Bangi to sign off the Super Six stages of the ongoing 2nd edition of the tournament in Malaysia.

The Sri Lankan openers Sanjana Kavindi and wicket-keeper batter Sumudu Nisansala got their side off to a very impressive start with a 42-run opening partnership after skipper Manudi Nanayakkara won the toss and opted to bat first. The pair looked settled and ready to step on the accelerator when Tegan Williamson broke the opening stand by removing the wicket-keeper batter Sumudu Nisansala (18 off 15 balls) in the 8th over of the innings to provide the much-needed first breakthrough for Australia.

Skipper Manudi Nanayakkara joined Sanjana Kavindi at the crease and the pair took their side past the 50-run mark with a crucial 14-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. Lily Bassingthwaighte picked up the wicket of Sanjana Kavindi (19 off 35 balls) to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side. Hiruni Hansika joined skipper Manudi Nanayakkara at the crease and the duo stitched another vital 21-run partnership for the 3rd wicket.

Hasrat Gill picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Manudi Nanayakkara (15 off 23 balls) to provide the 3rd breakthrough for Australia. Sri Lanka eventually ended up with a competitive total of 99/8 in their quota of 20 overs. Hiruni Hansika (14 off 22 balls) was the only other batter to enter the double digits with the bat for Sri Lanka.

Lily Bassingthwaighte (4-1-7-3), Hasrat Gill (4-0-18-2), and Tegan Williamson (3-0-19-2) were the top performers with the ball for Australia. Chasing a target of 100, Australia lost the wicket of their opening batter Kate Pelle in the 2nd over of the run chase. Chamodi Praboda provided the first breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

Skipper Lucy Hamilton (10 off 9 balls) joined Ines Mckeon (10 off 20 balls) at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 20-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers bounced back and removed both the set batters in quick succession, to wrest the control back.

Eleanor Larosa (18 off 27 balls) joined Caoimhe Bray at the crease and kept the run chase alive with a much-needed 41-run partnership for the 4th wicket, also taking them past the 50-run mark. Limansa Thilakarathna broke the threatening stand by removing Caoimhe Bray (27 off 32 balls) in the 15th over of the run chase to provide the much-needed breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

Australia was eventually restricted to 87/8 in their quota of 20 overs, falling 12 runs short of the target. Wicket-keeper batter Grace Lyons (10 off 9 balls) was the only other batter to enter into the double digits for Australia. Chamodi Praboda (4-0-13-2), Pramudi Methsara (4-0-16-2), and Aseni Thalagune (3-0-18-2) picked up a couple of wickets with the ball for Sri Lanka. Limansa Thilakarathna (4-0-18-1) was also impressive with the ball for her side.

She was instrumental alongside the other Sri Lankan spinners in helping the Manudi Nanayakkara-led side sign off their campaign in the ongoing 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025, in Malaysia. They have unfortunately missed out on a spot in the semi-final as their Super Six game against Scotland was washed out.
