Chloe Tryon recently became the third South African woman to claim a hat-trick in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs), joining the elite company of Dane van Niekerk and Masabata Klaas.

Van Niekerk was the trailblazer, taking South Africa’s first WODI hat-trick in January 2013 against the West Indies, finishing with remarkable figures of 5/28. Masabata Klaas followed in May 2019, achieving her hat-trick against Pakistan and becoming the tenth bowler overall to do so in WODIs.
Tryon’s achievement not only highlights her personal milestone but also underscores the growing legacy of South African women’s cricket in producing world-class bowlers capable of game-changing performances. Each of these hat-tricks stands as a testament to their skill and impact on the international stage.
Earlier in the day, South Africa Women were reduced to 85/5, courtesy to Dewmi Vihanga’s five-wicket haul, however, Annerie Dercksen and Chloe Tryon had a massive partnership following that as they led South Africa’s fightback and helped them post a daunting total.
Dercksen notched up a rollicking century, while Tryon scored 74(51) as South Africa Women finished with 315/9 in 50 overs. Chasing such a stiff target was never going to be easy and although Sri Lanka had a few useful partnerships at the top, none of their batters were able to make significant contributions.
The score for Sri Lanka in the second innings after 41 overs was 227-6. With 89 runs required in the last 9 overs and 4 wickets to spare, Chloe Tyron was the bowler coming in to bowl the 42nd over. Sri Lanka were well versed in the game with Anushka Sanjeewani and Dewmi Vihanga trying to build a partnership, but it was Tryon who had different plans for the evening.
Tryon’s first delivery to Vihanga was a tossed-up delivery on leg, Dewmi Vihanga flicked it towards deep square leg where de Klerk sprinted to her left and completed a fantastic diving catch to remove the batter. Dewmi Vihanga looked good for a brief period but failed to convert her start.
With Vihanga back to the pavilion Sugandika was ready to take the strike on the next delivery. A full and wide outside off delivery trapped Sugandika to slice it towards backward point and it was Tryon’s fourth wicket of the day and also on a hat-trick. It was also Nadine de Klerk’s second catch. The hat-trick delivery was an absolute stunner when Tryon bowled fraction short outside off and Malki Madara attempted a cut shot. It was a thick outside edge and the keeper Sinalo Jafta took a sharp catch.
Chloe Tryon was absolutely impressive with the ball as she took a hat-trick and ended up picking 5 wickets in her spell. A perfect all-round performance by Tryon, indeed. Also, the fielding between the two teams was significantly contrasting. Sri Lanka dropped 6-7 catches, while South Africa Women took some absolute blinders on the field.
Player of the match Chloe Tyron during the post-match presentation said, “We were in a bit of trouble, and we just wanted to take it as deep as possible. I knew I just had to be there till the end. I knew I had plenty of time, Annerie was hitting the ball so sweetly, so I knew I could take my time and just rotate the strike. I woke up under the weather, so I don’t know how I did it today. Just an unforgettable day.”
