The South Africa Women Under-19s kicked off their tour of Pakistan with a hard-fought, four-wicket victory over the hosts at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. It was an opening match defined by low-scoring grit, where South Africa’s early bowling brilliance pinned Pakistan down, before a steady top-order chase allowed the visitors to cross the finish line. Despite a spirited fightback from Pakistan’s spinners and a late lower-order cameo, South Africa managed to hunt down the 104-run target comfortably in terms of deliveries, wrapping up the game with 24 balls to spare.

Pakistan’s decision to bat first quickly turned into a nightmare as their top order collapsed spectacularly. The South African opening bowlers struck immediately, leaving Pakistan reeling at a disastrous 0 for 3 after eight balls. The early blitz completely shattered the hosts’ initial game plan, forcing them onto the back foot within the opening couple of overs. South Africa’s disciplined lines made it incredibly difficult for the incoming batters to settle down, keeping the pressure firmly on the home side.
Faced with an absolute catastrophe, Aqsa Habib and Zoofishan Ayyaz stepped up to steady the rocking ship. The duo dug in deep to construct a crucial 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket, doing the essential repair work required to make the game competitive. Aqsa Habib anchored the innings with a patient 38 off 50 deliveries, finding the boundary six times, while Zoofishan played a solid supporting role with a 40-ball 30. Skipper Fizza Fiaz also chipped in with a run-a-ball 14 to help build some momentum.
Just when the innings looked like it might stall, Shahar Bano provided the late fireworks Pakistan desperately needed. Walking in at number seven, Bano smashed a fiery, unbeaten 18 off just 8 balls, clearing the ropes once and hitting two fours. Her quick cameo pushed Pakistan to a respectable total of 103 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. For South Africa, the standout performer with the ball was leg-spinner Ashleigh van Wyk, who spun a web around the batters to claim excellent figures of 3 for 15, while pacer Miya Lalor picked up 2 for 21.
South Africa’s response started in contrasting fashion, courtesy of a blazing 47-run opening partnership. Player of the Match Chanel Venter led the charge, looking completely in control as she cracked a 32-ball 41, featuring three boundaries and two massive sixes. She was ably supported by Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout, who made a brisk 22 off 20 balls. Their explosive start took the sting out of the chase early on, putting the visitors firmly in the driver’s seat.
However, Pakistan refused to throw in the towel and triggered a mini-collapse through debutant left-arm spinner Maham Nazakat. Nazakat turned the game on its head in the seventh over, taking two quick wickets to halt South Africa’s cruise. South Africa suddenly slipped from a comfortable position to 94 for 5 as Shahar Bano also chipped in with two wickets. Nazakat finished with figures of 2 for 17, while Bano backed up her batting with 2 for 16, putting real pressure on the middle order.
Despite the late hiccups and the duck suffered by skipper Mieke van Voorst, South Africa’s lower middle order held their nerve. Wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander played a calm, unbeaten hand of 9 runs from 19 balls to weather the storm. In the end, Daneli Boshoff struck the winning runs, remaining unbeaten on 6, as South Africa crossed the finish line at 104 for 6 in the 16th over, taking a 1-0 lead in the 5-match youth series.
