Bimenyimana’s 4-Fer Powers Rwanda Women to 60-Run Win Over Zimbabwe U19

The 4th match of the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20I Tournament in Lagos unfolded as a commanding display from Rwanda Women, who outclassed Zimbabwe Women Under-19s with both bat and ball in a well-rounded performance. Opting to bat first, Rwanda’s innings had a steady yet evolving tempo, shaped by key partnerships and timely acceleration in the middle and death overs.

Rwanda’s innings did not begin with fireworks, as Fanny Utagushimaninde struggled to find fluency early on, managing just 6 off 20 deliveries before becoming the first wicket to fall at 32 in 5.5 overs. However, the innings was anchored beautifully by Gisele Ishimwe, who brought composure and intent to the crease. Her 40 off 32 balls, laced with six boundaries, formed the backbone of Rwanda’s batting effort. She found support in phases, notably with captain Marie Bimenyimana, although the latter’s stay was cut short due to a sharp run-out after scoring 7, leaving Rwanda at 52/2 in 9.2 overs.

The momentum truly shifted during the partnership between Ishimwe and Clarisse Uwase, who added valuable runs to push the innings forward. Uwase contributed a steady 19 off 23 balls, ensuring stability through the middle overs before falling at 94 in 15.3 overs. Ishimwe’s departure earlier at 75 in 13.2 overs had briefly slowed things down, but Rwanda regained control through their lower middle order.

The standout contribution came from Merveille Uwase, whose explosive unbeaten 39 off just 20 deliveries, including three fours and a six at a remarkable strike rate of 195.00, provided the late flourish Rwanda needed. She stitched together crucial runs with Henriette Ishimwe (10 off 11) and later with Alice Ikuwze (9* off 4), ensuring Rwanda finished strongly in the final overs. Their late partnerships propelled the innings forward, adding vital runs in the death phase. Rwanda Women eventually posted 143/5 in 20 overs, with extras contributing 13 runs.

Zimbabwe Women U19 bowlers had a mixed outing. Buhlebenkosi Maposa was the most economical, picking up 1 wicket for 17 runs in her 3 overs. Christine Mutasa and Tadiwa Garutsa also chipped in with a wicket each, conceding 18 and 23 runs respectively. Tawananaysha Zvomarima and others found it harder to contain the flow, with Rwanda capitalizing in the latter stages.

Chasing 144, Zimbabwe Women U19 never found their footing as Rwanda’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance. The innings unraveled quickly, with early breakthroughs leaving them reeling at 14/4 inside just 3.2 overs. Nicolette Nyika and Lorraine Pemhiwa departed without troubling the scorers much, while Beloved Biza’s brief 13 off 11 provided little resistance. The top-order collapse set the tone for what became a one-sided chase.

Rwanda’s captain Marie Bimenyimana led from the front with the ball, producing a match-defining spell of 4 wickets for just 17 runs in 3.4 overs. She was well supported by Rosette Shimwamana, who claimed 3 wickets, and Rosine Irera, who added 2 crucial scalps. Their combined effort ensured Zimbabwe never built any meaningful partnerships throughout the innings.

Christine Mutasa stood out as the lone fighter for Zimbabwe Women U19, scoring a counterattacking 41 off 27 balls with five fours and two sixes. She attempted to rebuild after the early collapse, briefly stabilizing the innings alongside Salem Museka (14 off 11). However, once that partnership was broken at 40, the lower order failed to offer resistance. Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals, including a run-out of Buhlebenkosi Maposa and disciplined bowling that wrapped up the innings swiftly.
