The match began with England Women striking early after opting to bowl first. Jess Kerr and Bree Illing could not settle as England’s new-ball bowlers kept things tight from the outset. Lauren Bell drew first blood when she removed Suzie Bates for 6, leaving New Zealand struggling at 7/1 in just the second over. Georgia Plimmer attempted to counterattack with three boundaries during her 20-run knock, but England’s disciplined seam attack continued to ask questions. Plimmer and Amelia Kerr added 35 runs for the second wicket before Bell trapped Plimmer’s partner and reduced the visitors to 42/2.

From there, captain Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green steadied the innings with the most important partnership of the New Zealand innings. Kerr played a patient knock of 55 from 82 deliveries, rotating strike smartly while Green gradually accelerated. Their 105-run stand for the third wicket rebuilt the innings beautifully after the early setbacks and shifted momentum toward New Zealand Women. Green looked particularly fluent during her 88-run knock from 107 balls, striking nine boundaries and controlling the middle overs with confidence.

England, however, responded brilliantly in the latter half of the innings. Charlie Dean produced a match-defining spell, dismissing Brooke Halliday and Jess Kerr while conceding just 21 runs in her seven overs. Tilly Corteen-Coleman also chipped in with two wickets, including the key dismissal of Amelia Kerr, while Lauren Bell finished with 2/38 from 9.4 overs. Dani Gibson and Jodi Grewcock provided valuable support with one wicket each. Once Amelia Kerr departed at 147/3, New Zealand lost momentum rapidly, slipping from a promising position to 210 all out in 48.4 overs. Green’s dismissal for 88 in the 46th over triggered the collapse as the visitors lost their final seven wickets for just 63 runs. Rosemary Mair remained unbeaten on 4 while Bree Illing was run out for a duck during the closing stages.

Chasing 211, England Women endured a shaky beginning against an energetic New Zealand bowling attack. Rosemary Mair struck with the new ball by dismissing Jodi Grewcock for 3, while Bree Illing trapped Heather Knight lbw for 19. England soon slipped to 42/3 when Emma Lamb fell for 15 after sharing a modest partnership with Maia Bouchier. Amelia Kerr then added further pressure by dismissing Amy Jones and Dani Gibson during crucial middle overs.

Amid the tension, Maia Bouchier anchored the chase with a calm and mature innings of 59 from 69 deliveries. She stitched together key partnerships that kept England in the contest despite regular wickets falling at the other end. Freya Kemp added a valuable 30 off 38 balls in a 68-run partnership with Bouchier that briefly put England in control. However, New Zealand bounced back again as Freya Kemp was run out at 110/4, opening the door for another collapse.

The game turned dramatic in the final phase. England slipped from 160/7 to 201/9 as New Zealand’s bowlers tightened the screws. Rosemary Mair delivered an outstanding spell of 3/42 in her 10 overs, while Amelia Kerr claimed 2/54 and Bree Illing bowled economically to finish with 1/31. Nensi Patel also impressed with figures of 1/34 from nine overs, keeping the pressure alive throughout the chase.

With the match hanging in the balance, Charlie Dean emerged as England’s hero. The all-rounder stayed unbeaten on 31 from 46 balls and showed tremendous composure under pressure. Alongside Lauren Bell, who contributed a fighting 12, Dean guided England closer before Bell was dismissed with only 10 runs still needed. England were still under immense pressure at 201/9, but Dean found support from Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who remained unbeaten on 3. The pair calmly completed the chase in 48.2 overs, sealing a memorable one-wicket victory.

The opening ODI delivered everything cricket fans could ask for, quality bowling, resilient batting partnerships, pressure-filled moments, and a thrilling finish. While Maddy Green and Amelia Kerr starred for New Zealand Women, England Women held their composure better in the decisive moments. Charlie Dean’s all-round contribution of 31 not out and 2/21 earned her the Player of the Match award as England Women took an early advantage in the ODI series.
