Priya Punia’s fifty in vain as Australia A beat India A by 5 Runs to take 1-0 lead

The Australian A side led by skipper Tahlia McGrath is hosting the India A side led by skipper Minnu Mani for an all-format series that includes a three-match T20 series, followed by a three-match One Day series and then a one-off unofficial red-ball Test.

The series got underway on 7th August 2024 and will conclude on 24th August 2024. India A skipper Minnu Mani won the toss and opted to field first at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane. After being inserted to bat first, the Australian A openers Tahlia Wilson and Katie Mack got their side off to a good start with a 74-run opening partnership. The duo scored at a run rate of around 8 runs an over.

Saika Ishaque picked up the wicket of Tahlia Wilson to provide the first breakthrough for India A. Charlie Knott joined Katie Mack at the crease and the duo stitched a 17-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. Saika Ishaque came back and struck twice in the 12th over of the innings, to bring her side back into the contest. Tess Flintoff joined Charlie Knott at the crease and the duo stitched a 24-run partnership for the 4th wicket to take their side past the 100-run mark.

Sayali Satghare struck twice in the 15th over. However, Australia eventually ended up with a total of 163/5 in their quota of overs. The 47-run 6th wicket partnership between Maddy Darke and wicket-keeper batter Nicole Faltum played a crucial role in helping their side go past the 160-run mark. Tahlia Wilson (50 off 34 balls), Katie Mack (39 off 31 balls), wicket-keeper batter Nicole Faltum (25 off 16 balls), and Maddy Darke (23 off 16 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Australia A.

Saika Ishaque (4-0-33-3), Sayali Satghare (4-0-27-2), and Tanuja Kanwer (4-0-27-0) were the top performers with the ball for India A. Chasing a target of 164, the Indian A openers Shweta Sehrawat and Priya Punia got their side off to a steady start with a 27-run opening partnership. Wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Australia A.

Tanuja Kanwer joined Priya Punia at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 64-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side to the 100-run mark. Maitlan Brown picked up the wicket of Tanuja Kanwer to provide the 3rd breakthrough for Australia A. India A kept losing wickets at regular intervals and as a result, they were restricted to 158/6 in their quota of overs.

India A fell short of the target by five runs. Priya Punia (76 off 59 balls), Tanuja Kanwer (22 off 20 balls), and Sayali Satghare (14 off 7 balls) were the top performers with the bat India A. Maitlan Brown (4-0-30-2), Sophie Dey (4-0-19-1), and skipper Tahlia McGrath (4-0-30-0) were the top performers with the ball for Australia A. The Tahlia McGrath-led side took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series.
