Chamari Athapaththu Smashes Unbeaten 106 as Sri Lanka Women Hammer Ireland by Nine Wickets

In Match No. 20 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the County Ground in Bristol, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected to bowl first against Ireland. They managed a total of 130/5 in their 20 overs after recovering from a shaky start, anchored primarily by their captain Gaby Lewis’s fighting half-century. However, Sri Lanka chased down the required effortlessly, in just 15.3 overs with 9 wickets to spare, driven by a sensational, unbeaten century from Athapaththu.

Ireland Women fought their way to a total of 130/5 in their 20 overs, spearheaded by a phenomenal captain’s knock from Gaby Lewis. The skipper anchored the innings with a brilliant 59 off 50 deliveries, piercing the field for 8 boundaries before finally being cleaned up by Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. The rest of the top order found the going tough under immense pressure.

Wicket-keeper Amy Hunter was caught short for a duck after just two balls, run out by Kaushani Nuthyangana, while vice-captain Orla Prendergast fell in identical scoreless fashion after a 6-ball struggle, stumped by Kaushani Nuthyangana off the bowling of Sugandika Kumari. A mid-innings rebuild saw Rebecca Stokell counterattack briefly with a brisk 13 off 12 balls including 3 boundaries, before giving a catch to Kavisha Dilhari off Mithali Ayodhya Bandara.

She was well-supported by Leah Paul, who ground out a crucial 20 runs from 27 balls before falling victim to the safe hands of Kaushani Nuthyangana off Nilakshi de Silva.
The finishing touches were provided by Alice Tector, who provided a vital late injection of momentum with an unbeaten, aggressive 28 off 21 balls. Walking off alongside Louise Little (1* off 2), Tector’s fireworks lifted Ireland to a defendable 130. Sri Lanka Women put on a disciplined and collective bowling display to restrict Ireland to 130/5.

The bowling effort was anchored by an incredibly economical spell from Mithali Ayodhya Bandara, who choked the scoring rate by giving away just 18 runs in her 4 overs, bowling a rare maiden. The pressure was sustained across the board, with Sugandika Kumari delivering an active 4-over spell, conceding 26 runs while bagging a wicket of her own. Though Nimasha Meepage went wicketless, she matched Kumari’s control perfectly by giving away an identical 26 runs from her 4 overs.

All-rounder Kavisha Dilhari also played her part in keeping things tight during the middle overs, conceding 21 runs from her 3 overs. To close out the innings, captain Chamari Athapaththu led from the front, taking a vital wicket during her 3-over spell for 23 runs. She was neatly complemented by Nilakshi de Silva, who wrapped up a clinical bowling performance with a swift 2-over spell, giving away just 12 runs and chipping in with a wicket. Thanks to this tightly knit team effort, Sri Lanka kept a firm lid on the scoring, ensuring Ireland’s batters never fully broke free.

It was an absolute masterclass of a chase by Sri Lanka, orchestrated by a blistering, unbeaten century from captain Chamari Athapaththu. She completely dominated the Irish bowling attack, smashing 106 runs off just 61 balls at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 173.77, a phenomenal knock punctuated by 17 boundaries and 2 towering sixes. At the other end, her opening partner Imesha Dulani played a patient anchoring role, contributing a steady 20 off 27 deliveries before being clean-bowled by Ireland’s Orla Prendergast—who claimed the solitary wicket of the innings.

Following the breakthrough, Nilakshika de Silva joined her captain out in the middle, remaining calm with a quick 4* off 5 balls to help guide Sri Lanka over the finish line. Aided by 4 extras, Sri Lanka comfortably chased down the target, finishing at 134 for 1 in just 15.3 overs to secure a resounding 9-wicket victory.

The Irish bowlers faced an absolute onslaught during Sri Lanka’s swift, 9-wicket victory. Facing a clinical batting display that chased down the target in just 15.3 overs, Orla Prendergast stood out as the lone bright spot for her side. She delivered an exceptionally disciplined 4-over spell, conceding only 22 runs and capturing the solitary Sri Lankan wicket to fall.

The rest of the attack, however, found it difficult to stem the flow of runs. Lara McBride was taken out of the attack after 2.3 overs, giving away 22 runs. Meanwhile, Arlene Kelly and Cara Murray finished with identical, expensive figures, both bleeding 27 runs from their respective 3 overs. It was Aimee Maguire who bore the brunt of the damage, leaking 35 runs in her 3 completed overs, as the Irish unit struggled collectively to find answers to Sri Lanka’s aggressive chase.
