The clash between Namibia Women and Papua New Guinea Women in Match 23 of the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy 2025 was nothing short of exhilarating, culminating in a nail-biting finish that saw Papua New Guinea (PNG) snatch victory by just one run.

Namibia won the toss and chose to field first. The PNG Women started their innings with an exciting opening pair, but their momentum quickly faded. Brenda Tau stood out, scoring 30 runs off 29 balls and hitting four boundaries, stabilising the innings when early wickets fell. Naoani Vare and Henao Thomas contributed with small yet vital scores, adding 15 runs off 39 balls and 14 runs off 12 balls, respectively. In the later stages, Erani Pokana remained unbeaten on 17* runs from 19 balls, helping PNG reach a total of 94 for 7 in their 20 overs.
On the bowling front for Namibia, several bowlers delivered impressive performances. Eveleen Kejarukua picked up 1 wicket for 13 runs in her 4 overs, while Naomi Benjamin took 1 for 22 in 3 overs. The experienced Leigh Marie Visser was particularly impactful, taking 2 wickets for 21 runs in just 3 overs. Captain Sune Wittmann also made a key contribution, claiming 2 wickets for just 10 runs in her 2 overs, applying pressure at crucial moments.
Chasing a target of 95 runs, Namibia started their innings with cautious optimism. However, their top order faced challenges early on, with both openers falling cheaply due to PNG’s disciplined bowling. The innings regained some hope thanks to a gritty partnership between Wilka Mwatile and Yasmeen Khan. Mwatile struck a quick 24 off 18 balls, hitting three boundaries, while Yasmeen anchored the innings with a steady 30 off 36 deliveries. Their partnership briefly lifted Namibia’s spirits.
As the innings unfolded, tension mounted, and Namibia found themselves in a precarious position. Jurriene Diergaardt added a valuable 5 runs off 7 balls, while captain Wittmann scored 17 runs off 25 balls, keeping the chase alive as they approached the final overs. With just a couple of runs needed in the last over, Namibia fell agonizingly short, finishing on 93 for 7 after 20 overs.
PNG’s bowlers rose to the challenge under pressure. Isabel Toua’s key 2-wicket spell was significant, but it was captain Pauke Siaka who truly shone, delivering an outstanding performance with 3 wickets for 15 runs in her 4 overs. Her leadership and crucial overs earned her the Player of the Match award as she guided her team to a thrilling one-run victory.
