Match 5: Nigeria Women vs Malawi Women
The Malawi skipper, Favour Piliyesi, went against the early trends of the tournament and opted to field first after winning the toss. The Nigerian openers Beauty Oguai and Omosigho Eguakun got their side off to a promising start with a 57-run stand. Skipper Favour Piliyesi took matters into her own hands, breaking the opening stand by sending Omosigho Eguakun (26 off 19 balls) back to the pavilion in the 8th over of the innings, providing the much-needed 1st breakthrough for Malawi.
The Nigerian batters stitched decent partnerships throughout the innings and ensured the momentum continued throughout the innings. Nigeria posted 152/7 in their quota of 20 overs. Beauty Oguai (26 off 28 balls), skipper Christabel Chukwuonye (20 off 12 balls), Shola Adekunle (32 off 27 balls) and Inyene Umoh (17 off 14 balls) were the top performers with the ball for Nigeria. Princess Chidatha (4-0-26-2), Sphiwe Frank (4-0-28-1) and Bridget Kasinja (4-0-31-1) were the top performers with the ball for Malawi.
Chasing a target of 153, most of the Malawian batters succumbed to the scoreboard pressure. As a result, they were eventually bundled out for 58, with 9 balls to spare, falling 94 runs short of the target. Sphiwe Frank (24 off 26 balls) and Shavoni Akileni (14 off 24 balls) were the only batters to enter the double digits with the bat for their side. Match 6: Rwanda Women vs Namibia Women
The Rwanda skipper Grace Mugwaneza won the toss and opted to bat first. The Rwandan openers Liliane Ufitinema (19 off 27 balls) and the wicket-keeper batter Fanny Utagushimaninde set up a solid launching base with a massive 98-run opening stand. Jani-Mari van Heerden broke the stand by sending an ominous Fanny Utagushimaninde (75 off 53 balls) back to the pavilion in the 12th over of the innings, providing the much-needed 1st breakthrough for Namibia.
The Namibian bowlers pounced on the opening and triggered a massive collapse as Rwanda managed 147/9, losing their next 8 wickets for just 49 runs. Deborah Uwase (11 off 14 balls) was the only other batter to enter the double digits with the bat for her side. Unombuiro Kaanjosa (4-0-20-4), Veronika Tobias (3-0-19-1), Mea Meyer (3-0-22-2) and Vorster Alexa (3-0-21-1) were the top performers with the ball for Namibia.
The Namibian batters, however, couldn’t back up a spirited performance from the bowlers. As a result, they were bundled out for just 65, with 41 balls to spare, falling 82 runs short of the target. Skipper Unombuiro Kaanjosa (22 off 24 balls) was the only batter to enter the double digits with the bat for her side. Chanceline Umutonni (3-0-21-4), Ruth Uwimana (3.1-0-9-3) and Justine Ingabire (3-0-9-1) were the top performers with the ball for Rwanda. Fanny Utagushimaninde was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-defining half-century (75 off 53 balls). Her knock included 12 boundaries.
Match 7: Tanzania Women vs Uganda Women
Tanzania’s intent to put the runs on the board after skipper Saumu Hussein won the toss was derailed quickly as they were bundled out for just 41 in 16.1 overs courtesy of an impeccable display of bowling from the Uganda bowlers. None of the Tanzania batters managed to enter the double digits with the bat. Mischelle Ariago (4-1-8-2), Sarah Tino (4-0-10-2), Sheirah Namagoba (3-0-11-2) and Mariam Biribawa (3.1-1-7-1) were sensational with the ball for Uganda.
Chasing a tiny total of 42, Uganda got over the line but not before the Tanzania bowlers showed some character to fight back, accounting for 5 scalps. Joan Ilora (14* off 14 balls) top-scored with the bat for Uganda. Mischelle Ariago was awarded the Player of the Match.
Match 8: Zimbabwe Women vs Kenya Women
Zimbabwe posted a competitive total of 128/7 in their quota of 20 overs after skipper Lorraine Pemhiwa won the toss and opted to bat first. The 32-run 6th wicket partnership between Naomi Mhlekwa and Beloved Biza (40 off 38 balls) was the highest partnership of the innings for Zimbabwe. Lorraine Pemhiwa (17 off 19 balls) and Sharmaine Manyukwi (11 off 9 balls) were the only other batters to enter the double digits with the bat for their side.
Zainab Hamisi (4-0-21-2), Janet Nthenya (3,5-0-24-1), skipper Melvin Khagoitsa (4-0-23-1) and Stella Rodgers (3-0-21-1) were the top performers with the ball for Kenya. Chasing a target of 129, the Kenya batters struggled to get to terms with the conditions on offer. As a result, they were bundled out for 49 in 15.1 overs, falling 79 runs short of the target.
Zainab Hamisi (15 off 19 balls) and Condolisa Atieno (13 off 24 balls) were the only batters to enter the double digits with the bat.
