Ryana MacDonald-Gay Withdraws from The Hundred 2025; Ellie Anderson Named Replacement

The Oval Invincibles have been dealt a significant blow midway through their The Hundred 2025 campaign, with young England pace-bowling all-rounder Ryana MacDonald-Gay forced to withdraw due to injury.

The 20-year-old, who has been a bright presence for both club and country, has sustained a back stress injury, ruling her out for the remainder of the tournament. MacDonald-Gay had already missed the last two fixtures, and the scans confirmed what the team had feared.

Over the years, MacDonald-Gay has become a pillar of consistency for the Invincibles. Having featured across four successive seasons since 2022, she has steadily grown into a dependable wicket-taker. Her early breakthrough came in 2022, where she picked up five wickets in four innings with a best of 2/25.

A year later, she shone even brighter with eight wickets from seven matches, headlined by a superb 4/16. In 2024, she matched the tally again, claiming eight wickets in nine games, this time with a best of 2/20.

This season, although limited to just three outings, she still managed to leave her mark with disciplined spells, registering figures of 0/20 against the London Spirit, 1/27 versus the Manchester Originals, and 1/23 against the Birmingham Phoenix.

Her absence will be deeply felt, especially given her strong recent form in domestic cricket. Representing Surrey in the Women’s T20 Blast 2025, she collected 15 wickets from 11 matches, including a standout 4/14.

That rhythm carried into the Women’s One Day Cup, where she added another 15 wickets from nine appearances, capped by a best of 4/47. These numbers underline why the Invincibles will struggle to replace her impact at such a crucial stage of the competition.

Stepping into the gap is Somerset’s Ellie Anderson, a 21-year-old seamer with promising credentials. Anderson brings with her valuable match practice, having played nine games in the Blast where she claimed seven wickets, her best performance being 3/19.

She has also been effective in the Women’s One Day Cup, taking 11 wickets from 10 matches with the best of 3/49. While the shoes of MacDonald-Gay are not easy to fill, Anderson’s arrival offers the Invincibles fresh energy and depth in their bowling attack.

The Invincibles’ campaign so far has been a mixed bag, with two wins and three losses leaving them in fifth place on the points table with eight points. However, the season is still wide open, and the team will be desperate to push towards the top three and secure a playoff berth.

Their next challenge is a high-stakes clash against the Trent Rockets on August 21st, set to begin at 7:30 PM IST, where all eyes will be on how quickly Anderson can settle in and help turn the tide.
