It was around 11:15 pm in India and around 7,500 km away on a muggy evening in Derby in July 2017, India’s vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur had written history. Her on-field effort helped the Indian team to cruise its way through to the final of ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. She plundered Australian resources like never before and had given enough stories to the cricket journalist all across the globe to write about.
The likes of Smriti Mandhana, Punam Raut, Mansi Joshi, and many others were unknown to many watching this sport before the start of the World Cup had suddenly been in the limelight. The expectations of competing had suddenly switched to the hunger of winning. Indian Women’s Cricket which was treated as Mithali Raj’s team or Jhulan Goswami’s team was suddenly seen as a unit.
That 9-run loss against the Englishwomen in the final was never seen as a ‘loss’ to Indian Cricket. The team which came into the tournament as underdogs was instantaneously seen as pure contenders to even clinch the title.
The Sport which was earlier poisoned by the need to entertain instead of uplift the audience had finally risen on its feet to give the same stature to the women’s cricket. The ‘unwrinkled’ hands started to look wrinkled, the viewership for Women’s cricket had suddenly shot up, and the ‘Indian Cricket team’ was finally seen as Men’s and Women’s team.
After almost a year and a half the Women’s cricket will once again be in action at the World’s stage, competing against 9 top-quality teams in the shortest format of the game. The 15-member squad seems to be working regressively with the full fortitude to rewind former times and tinker with ‘lost’ destiny.
And now, when the clocks will switch to 9th of November it will once again give an opportunity not only to the 11 players who step on the field but also to the passionate cricket-loving country to show their ‘love’ for the game.
It won’t be wrong to say that the Indian Women’s Cricket still stand between two points where every game is important for them as a team to let the belief of 1.5 billion people stay intact. A tournament win here will certainly change Indian Cricket forever.
Even the thought of ‘fluke’ will never pop ever again. The shortest format of the game can build the longest affectionate concordance between the spectators and the players.
The 15-day tournament carries a whole lot of excitement and anticipation, but above all carries expectations, and especially from the Indian Cricket. So, will this stint prove to be a blessing for Indian Women’s Cricket?
