The Blaze Women produced a commanding performance in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026, defeating Warwickshire Women by 70 runs in Birmingham on August 26. The match followed a fascinating pattern, with The Blaze building their innings patiently before accelerating through the middle and death overs, while Warwickshire’s chase was driven by a superb 89 from Katie George and a valuable 52 from Brooke Halliday. However, Lucy Higham’s outstanding four-wicket spell and disciplined bowling from The Blaze ensured that Warwickshire were bowled out for 212 in 43.3 overs after being set a target of 283.
The Blaze Women began their innings with Marie Kelly and Tammy Beaumont, but the opening partnership lasted only five balls. Kelly struck one four on her way to 4 from 5 balls before she was caught by Austin off the bowling of Wong, leaving The Blaze at 4 for 1 after 0.5 overs. Beaumont then attempted to settle the innings alongside Kathryn Bryce. The pair put together the first substantial stand of the innings, taking the score from 4 to 84 before Beaumont departed in the 17.3rd over. Beaumont made 32 from 49 balls, including one four, while Bryce continued to hold the innings together.
The Blaze suffered another setback at 104 when Bryce was dismissed in the 21.2nd over, having scored a composed 45 from 66 deliveries with three fours and a six. That left the side needing a strong partnership to regain momentum. Georgia Elwiss and Orla Prendergast supplied exactly that. Their partnership was the turning point of the innings as they added 93 runs between the third and fourth wickets, taking The Blaze from 104 to 197. Elwiss played with increasing authority, scoring 57 from 64 balls with seven fours at a strike rate of 89.06.
Prendergast was even more aggressive, producing an unbeaten-looking innings until her eventual dismissal for 69 from 73 balls, with five fours and two sixes. Their stand gave The Blaze the platform they needed to push towards a competitive total. Elwiss was eventually caught by Natasha Wraith off Wong in the 39.2nd over, bringing the score to 197. Sarah Bryce joined Prendergast and added 15 from 18 balls, but her dismissal at 242 in the 44.6th over, caught by Stonehouse off Phillips, briefly slowed the scoring.
The final phase saw The Blaze continue to attack. Prendergast fell for 69 at 253 in the 46.1st over after being caught by Halliday off Wong, while captain Kirstie Gordon was dismissed for 8 from 9 balls at 267 in the 48.1st over, trapped lbw by Wong. Emma Jones then provided an explosive finish, smashing an unbeaten 19 from only 12 balls at a strike rate of 158.33, including a four and a six. Lucy Higham also remained not out on 5 from five deliveries.
Extras contributed 28 runs, including 4 byes, 11 leg-byes, one no-ball and 12 wides, allowing The Blaze to finish on 282 for 7 after their 50 overs. For Warwickshire, Issy Wong was the standout bowler with five wickets for 58 runs from her 10 overs, while Phoebe Brett claimed two wickets for 51. Alexa Stonehouse, Em Arlott and Hannah Baker bowled economical spells without taking wickets, while Charis Pavely conceded only 19 from five overs. The Warwickshire attack also contributed 17 wides and no-balls, which proved significant in the final margin.
Warwickshire Women’s chase began disastrously when Davina Perrin was dismissed for 2 from just two balls, lbw to Grace Ballinger, with the score only 8 in the 1.2nd over. Meg Austin joined Katie George and attempted to rebuild, but Austin was dismissed for 7 from 27 balls at 23 in the 7.3rd over, caught by Beaumont off Ballinger. George then took charge with Brooke Halliday, and their partnership became the backbone of Warwickshire’s chase.
The pair added a substantial 125 runs for the third wicket, moving the score from 23 to 148 by the 29.5th over. George was particularly impressive, compiling 89 from 113 balls with eight fours and a six, while Halliday contributed 52 from 67 deliveries with four boundaries. Their partnership gave Warwickshire genuine hope of completing a successful 283-run chase, but The Blaze eventually found the breakthrough they needed when Halliday was caught by Kathryn Bryce off Prendergast.
From 148 onwards, Warwickshire struggled to maintain the required momentum. Charis Pavely scored 14 from 13 balls before being caught by Higham off Prendergast at 164 in the 33.1st over. Em Arlott also made 14 from 14 balls, hitting three fours, but fell at 184 in the 36.3rd over, caught by Kelly off Phillips. Natasha Wraith contributed 9 from 10 balls before being dismissed at 195 in the 39.2nd over, caught by Elwiss off Higham.
Issy Wong was then removed for a duck by Higham, leaving Warwickshire seven down at the same score. Alexa Stonehouse added 3 before Higham struck again, and George’s magnificent innings finally ended at 211 in the 42.5th over when she was caught by Kathryn Bryce off Higham. Phoebe Brett was dismissed for a duck at 212 in the 43.3rd over, giving Higham her fourth wicket and ending the Warwickshire innings.
The Blaze bowling attack shared the workload effectively. Lucy Higham was the star with four wickets for 41 runs in 8.3 overs, while Grace Ballinger claimed two wickets for 37 from seven overs and also bowled two no-balls and conceded two wides. Orla Prendergast took two wickets for 31 in six overs, Kathryn Bryce returned figures of one for 32 from six, and Charley Phillips delivered an economical spell of 8 overs for just 17 runs while taking one wicket. Kirstie Gordon went wicketless but bowled eight overs for 49 runs. Warwickshire’s chase ultimately ended at 212 in 43.3 overs, 70 runs short of The Blaze’s target.
