Kira Chathli’s 88 and Maitlan Brown’s 62 Power Surrey Women Past Lancashire in 3-Wicket Win

In a fiercely contested clash in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026 at The Oval, Surrey Women held their nerve in a high-quality chase to defeat Lancashire Women by three wickets with four overs still remaining. The encounter showcased composed batting performances, crucial middle-order partnerships, and impactful spells from bowlers on both sides, making it one of the more entertaining fixtures of the tournament.

Lancashire Women’s innings never exploded into complete dominance, but they consistently rebuilt after regular setbacks to post a competitive 246/9 from their 50 overs. Their innings began shakily when Seren Smale was dismissed early for a duck after Maitlan Brown struck in just the second over, leaving Lancashire at 7/1. Despite the early wicket, Eve Jones and captain Eleanor Threlkeld steadied the innings with a patient rebuilding partnership. Jones looked compact and assured throughout her stay, rotating strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries with seven boundaries.

The second wicket stand between Jones and Threlkeld added stability before Priyanaz Chatterji removed the Lancashire skipper for 20. Soon after, Danielle Gregory joined the attack and dismissed Madeline Penna cheaply, reducing Lancashire to 59/3. Fi Morris attempted to rebuild alongside Jones, but Surrey’s disciplined bowling continued to chip away. Morris added 11 before Gregory claimed another wicket, and Lancashire found themselves under pressure at 83/4.

At that stage, Eve Jones and Grace Johnson stitched together an important recovery partnership that shifted momentum back toward Lancashire. Johnson played fluently for her 39 from 56 deliveries, striking five boundaries and keeping the scoreboard moving. Jones, meanwhile, brought up a composed half-century and appeared set for a much bigger score before finally falling for 69 off 105 balls, dismissed by Gregory after anchoring the innings superbly. Their stand carried Lancashire past the 150-run mark and gave the lower middle order a platform.

The late overs saw valuable cameos from Ailsa Lister and Kate Cross. Lister struck 29 from 36 balls and added urgency with two boundaries and a six, while Cross counterattacked with 25 from just 20 deliveries at a strike rate of 125. Their partnerships ensured Lancashire crossed the 240-run mark, which at one stage had looked difficult. Grace Potts remained unbeaten on 16, while Hannah Jones stayed not out on 4 as Lancashire closed on 246/9.

Surrey Women’s bowling effort was led brilliantly by Danielle Gregory, whose spell of 3/42 from 10 overs proved decisive in restricting Lancashire from pushing beyond 260. Maitlan Brown also bowled with excellent discipline and aggression, taking 3/46 while removing key top-order batters. Priyanaz Chatterji chipped in with one wicket, while Alice Monaghan’s wicket of Grace Johnson came at an important phase. Surrey’s bowlers also benefited from sharp fielding and crucial catches during the middle overs.

Chasing 247, Surrey Women started aggressively through Sophia Dunkley, who immediately put pressure on Lancashire’s bowlers with crisp strokeplay. Dunkley smashed 30 from only 23 deliveries, hitting six boundaries before Grace Potts dismissed her at 57/1. Alice Monaghan then joined Paige Scholfield, but Lancashire fought back strongly through Grace Johnson and Madeline Penna. Scholfield fell for 1, while Monaghan made a brisk 26 before being bowled by Johnson.

Alice Davidson-Richards added an important 23, but Lancashire continued to strike at regular intervals. By the time Maitlan Brown arrived, Surrey were wobbling at 92/4 and the chase was delicately poised. What followed was the defining partnership of the match. Brown and captain Kira Chathli combined brilliantly in a game-changing 134-run stand that completely altered the momentum of the contest.

Chathli anchored the innings with immense composure, remaining unbeaten on 88 from 101 deliveries with nine boundaries. She paced the chase intelligently, absorbing pressure before accelerating in the latter half of the innings. Maitlan Brown provided the perfect support with an aggressive 62 from 74 balls, including five fours and a six. Their partnership frustrated Lancashire’s bowlers and steadily brought the target within reach.

Even though Lancashire managed late breakthroughs through Fi Morris and Kate Cross, Surrey never lost control. Cross was the standout bowler for Lancashire with figures of 3/52 from her 10 overs, dismissing Davidson-Richards, Jemima Spence, and Aylish Cranstone. Grace Potts bowled impressively as well, picking up 2/44, including the important wicket of Dunkley. Grace Johnson and Fi Morris also contributed with one wicket each, but Surrey’s experienced middle order ensured the chase stayed on track.

Kira Chathli fittingly guided Surrey home in the 46th over alongside Kalea Moore, sealing a memorable three-wicket victory and valuable points in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026. The win was built on resilience, smart partnerships, and calm finishing under pressure, while Lancashire were left to reflect on missed opportunities despite several strong individual performances.
