After being asked to bat first, Essex Women had an early setback when captain Grace Scrivens was dismissed for a duck in the opening over, giving Maitlan Brown immediate success. The pressure continued as Cordelia Griffith struggled to accelerate despite spending time at the crease, eventually scoring 10 runs from 29 balls before Priyanz Chatterji combined with a sharp catch to remove her. At 28/2, Essex were under pressure, but Ariana Dowse steadied the innings beautifully with the most fluent knock of the day for her side.

Dowse crafted a composed 69 from 105 deliveries, striking six boundaries and one six while building crucial partnerships through the middle overs. She first shared a 46-run stand with Sophia Smale, who contributed a valuable 22 off 30 balls with four boundaries. Even after Alice Macleod departed cheaply for 1, Essex found momentum through Florence Miller, whose unbeaten 74 from 68 deliveries changed the complexion of the innings. Miller counterattacked brilliantly with nine boundaries at a strike rate above 108 and stitched together useful partnerships lower down the order.

Joanne Gardner chipped in with a brisk 13, while Sophie Munro added 8 and Eva Gray scored 12 to keep the scoreboard moving. Essex Women were eventually bowled out for 227 in 49.5 overs, a total that looked competitive considering their shaky beginning.

Surrey’s bowling effort was collective and disciplined throughout the innings. Danielle Gregory led the attack superbly with figures of 3/51 from her 10 overs, consistently breaking developing stands. Priyanz Chatterji delivered a controlled spell of 2/37 in 10 overs, while Alice Monaghan also picked up 2 wickets for 45 runs. Maitlan Brown struck early and finished with 1/34, setting the tone with the new ball. Kalea Moore bowled economically during the middle phase, conceding only 46 from 9.5 overs, while Alice Davidson-Richards chipped in with a late over despite going wicketless.

Chasing 228, Surrey Women began positively through Paige Scholfield and Alice Monaghan. The opening pair added 40 runs before Eva Gray removed Scholfield for 18. Bryony Smith briefly entertained with a quick 7 off 4 balls, but Essex clawed back through Sophia Smale and Gray to reduce Surrey to 73/3. Captain Alice Davidson-Richards struggled to convert her start, falling for 12, and when Maitlan Brown contributed a useful 29 from 36 balls before becoming Sophia Smale’s second wicket, the chase was delicately balanced at 121/4.

Alice Monaghan then anchored the innings with a composed 49 off 67 deliveries, including six boundaries and a six. Her partnership with Aylish Cranstone proved crucial in rebuilding the chase. Although Danni Wyatt-Hodge managed only 1 and Jemima Spence scored 12 before departing, Cranstone remained calm under pressure. The middle-order batter played a mature, unbeaten innings of 31 from 39 balls, rotating strike effectively and absorbing pressure at key moments.

The decisive contribution came from Priyanz Chatterji, whose unbeaten 37 off 38 balls ensured Surrey crossed the line comfortably. Cranstone and Chatterji shared an unbroken partnership that sealed the chase at 229/7 in just 42.1 overs, completing a memorable three-wicket victory in this thrilling women’s domestic cricket clash.

Eva Gray also picked up 2 wickets and bowled with aggression during the powerplay and middle overs. Sophie Munro removed Alice Davidson-Richards and the supporting bowlers, including Grace Scrivens and Joanne Gardner. Essex tried to contain the scoring, but Surrey’s lower middle order held its nerve in the closing stages.
