Durham Women, after being put into bat, had a shaky start as Emma Marlow fell early for 6, caught by Capsey off the bowling of Tilly Corteen-Coleman, leaving the side at 13/1 in 3.5 overs. Tahlia Wilson tried to stabilise the innings but couldn’t convert her start, departing for 15 (27 balls), with Alice Monaghan chipping in to remove her. The early breakthroughs put pressure on Durham, but a crucial rebuilding phase followed.

The innings was anchored by skipper Hollie Armitage, who played a captain’s knock of 106 off 123 balls, striking 14 boundaries. She found an able partner in Mady Villiers, and the duo stitched together a vital 112-run partnership for the third wicket, lifting Durham from a precarious 61/2 to a strong position. Villiers contributed a solid 55 off 70 balls before falling to Kalea Moore. Armitage continued to lead the charge, but wickets began to fall at regular intervals after her dismissal at 208/5 in the 43.2 overs.

Bess Heath (14), Katherine Fraser (21), and a late cameo from Sophia Turner (18* off 10) ensured Durham pushed towards a competitive total. However, Surrey’s disciplined bowling effort kept them from completely running away with the game.

Corteen-Coleman (10-0-38-2) and Alice Capsey (5-0-20-1) were particularly effective, while Moore (10-0-50-2) and Monaghan also chipped in with key wickets. Maitlan Brown bowled economically (10-1-50-1), and despite Danielle Gregory going wicketless, she maintained pressure through her spell. Durham eventually closed on 256/8 in their 50 overs.

Chasing 257, Surrey Women couldn’t have asked for a worse start as Paige Scholfield was dismissed for 4 in the very first over by Lauren Filer. The early setback was compounded when Alice Monaghan (11) and Alice Capsey (13) fell cheaply, reducing Surrey to 35/3. Durham’s bowlers, especially Filer, who was outstanding with figures of 10-0-59-5, kept Surrey under early pressure.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically through a match-defining partnership between Kira Chathli and Danni Wyatt-Hodge. The pair added a massive 90-run stand for the fifth wicket after the dismissal of Alice Davidson-Richards (5).

Chathli scored a composed 58 off 58 balls, while Wyatt-Hodge took charge with a brilliant 96 off 83 deliveries, including 13 boundaries. Their partnership rebuilt the chase and brought Surrey back into contention after being 62/4.

Even after Chathli’s dismissal at 145/5, Wyatt-Hodge continued to attack, ensuring the required run rate stayed within reach. Jemima Spence added a quick 27 off 20 balls, further easing the chase before becoming Filer’s fifth victim. By the time Wyatt-Hodge fell agonisingly short of a century at 254/7 in 36.2 overs, Surrey were just three runs away. Maitlan Brown (27*) and Kalea Moore (4*) calmly finished the job, guiding Surrey to 258/7 in just 36.4 overs, sealing a convincing victory with 80 balls remaining.

For Durham, aside from Filer’s five-wicket haul, Mady Villiers (1/33) and Katie Levick (1/67) picked up wickets, but the rest of the attack struggled to contain the scoring rate. Grace Thompson and Sophia Turner went wicketless, while Katherine Fraser had a brief outing.

This match showcased a classic ODI contest filled with key partnerships, standout performances, and a clinical chase. Surrey Women’s ability to recover from early setbacks and capitalise on strong middle-order contributions proved decisive, making this a memorable win in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup.
