Batting first, Melbourne Renegades Women looked to establish a solid foundation through Courtney Webb and Hayley Matthews. The opening pair added 56 runs for the first wicket before Webb departed for 22 off 24 balls, having struck three boundaries. Hannah Darlington provided the breakthrough, with wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson completing the catch. Matthews continued to attack, scoring 45 off 30 deliveries, including six fours and a six, as she kept the Renegades moving at a healthy pace. However, Georgia Voll dismissed the dangerous opener at 76 in 10.1 overs, with Bell taking the catch.

The Renegades then lost momentum as Sophie Molineux managed seven off 13 balls before falling to Voll, with Phoebe Litchfield taking the catch. Georgia Wareham attempted to rebuild the innings with an important 23 off 19 deliveries, including three boundaries, but Voll struck again, leaving the Renegades at 86/4 in 12.1 overs. Samantha Bates also made an impact with the ball, dismissing Tess Flintoff for one off three balls, caught by Heather Knight. With wickets falling at regular intervals, the Renegades struggled to develop another substantial partnership.

Chloe Tryon contributed 10 off 12 balls before Voll claimed her fourth wicket, with Harris completing the catch. Deandra Dottin was dismissed for a two-ball duck by Nadine de Klerk, while Nicole Faltum scored two before being run out through a combined effort from Voll and Wilson. Annie Wikman remained unbeaten on nine off seven deliveries, and Tayla Vlaeminck added a useful unbeaten 10 off nine balls. Milly Illingworth fell for a duck to de Klerk, with Knight taking the catch, as Melbourne Renegades Women finished on 138/9.

Voll was the standout bowler with figures of 4/26 from four overs, while Darlington claimed 2/29. Bates and de Klerk picked up one wicket apiece, with Lauren Bell conceding 35 runs in four overs.

Chasing 139, Sydney Thunder Women made an aggressive start through Georgia Voll and captain Phoebe Litchfield. The opening partnership produced 34 runs before Voll was dismissed for 25 off 18 balls, including four boundaries and a six. Flintoff took the wicket, with Faltum completing the catch. Litchfield then scored 14 off 17 deliveries before Deandra Dottin removed the Thunder captain at 64 in the 8.1-over mark, with Molineux taking the catch.

Anika Learoyd subsequently took control of the chase, combining composure with attacking stroke play. She scored 48 off 37 balls, striking nine boundaries and keeping the required run rate under control. Learoyd shared a crucial partnership with Heather Knight, who provided stability and ensured the Renegades could not build sustained pressure. Their stand took Thunder closer to victory, although Vlaeminck dismissed Learoyd at 126 in 15.3 overs. Laura Harris fell for a two-ball duck soon afterwards, also dismissed by Vlaeminck, leaving Thunder at 127/4.

Knight remained unbeaten on 29 off 22 deliveries, including three fours, while Nadine de Klerk delivered a decisive finishing contribution. De Klerk smashed an unbeaten 12 off just six balls, striking three boundaries at a strike rate of 200.00. The pair ensured there were no further setbacks as Sydney Thunder Women reached 140/4 in 17 overs, sealing a six-wicket victory with three overs to spare.

For Melbourne Renegades Women, Vlaeminck was the leading wicket-taker with 2/23 from four overs, while Flintoff and Dottin claimed one wicket each. Matthews conceded 15 runs in her solitary over, while Molineux returned 0/23 from three overs. Wareham took 0/22 in three overs, Illingworth conceded 14 from two, and Tryon gave away seven runs in one over. Vlaeminck’s six wides and Flintoff’s two wides added to the extras, while Thunder’s 12 extras included 11 wides and one leg bye.

The opening WBBL 12 encounter showcased Thunder’s balanced performance with both bat and ball. Georgia Voll’s four-wicket haul restricted the Renegades despite Matthews’ aggressive 45, before Learoyd and Knight laid the foundation for the chase. De Klerk’s late hitting provided the finishing touch, giving Sydney Thunder Women a convincing start to their WBBL 12 campaign and leaving Melbourne Renegades Women with plenty to consider after a difficult opening outing.
