The 5th match of the T20 Spring Challenge 2026 at Bankstown Oval, Sydney delivered an action-packed, rain-curtailed thriller as the Sydney Sixers Women secured a tight 12-run victory (DLS method) against the ACT Meteors Women. After winning the toss on an overcast morning, ACT Women skipper Grace Lyons elected to bowl first, looking to make early inroads in reduced 9-over per side conditions.

The Sydney Sixers Women openers stepped out with purpose, laying down a formidable foundation. Lauren Kua and Claire Moore showcased fine composure, putting together a vital 54-run opening partnership off 41 balls. Kua played the anchor role brilliantly, top-scoring with a fluent 29 off 23 deliveries featuring two boundaries and a maximum, while Moore provided solid support with 22 off 20 balls with 2 fours. ACT Women finally found their breakthrough in the 7th over when Amber Smith drew a miscue from Claire Moore, caught by Angelina Genford at 54/1.
Shortly after, Stella Wilde removed the settled Lauren Kua, caught by Caitlin Mair at 60/2 in 7.4 overs. A quick fire 5-run stand off 3 balls between Kua and skipper Erin Burns kept the momentum going before Anesu Mushangwe dismissed Sarah Coyte for 5 off 3 in the 9th over. Burns then played a blistering cameo, smashing an unbeaten 18 off just 8 balls with 2 fours and 1 six, partnering with Courtney Sippel, who scored 1 not out off 1, in an unbroken 13-run stand off 5 balls to push the Sixers to a total of 78/3 in 9 overs.
The ACT bowling attack had mixed results as Zoe Cooke was economical returning 0/7 from 2 overs, while Amber Smith took 1/5 in 1 over, Stella Wilde took 1/22 in 2 overs, and Anesu Mushangwe picked up 1/18 in 2 overs. Amy Hunter with 0/16 in 1 over and Shivani Mehta with 0/8 in 1 over went wicketless during their spells.
Chasing a revised target, ACT Women endured a terrible start to their innings. Maitlan Brown struck on the fourth ball of the chase, getting Paris Bowdler out for 4 off 4 caught by Courtney Sippel with just 5 runs on the board. Shivani Mehta and Caitlin Mair steadied the ship temporarily with a counter-attacking 27-run second-wicket partnership off 21 balls. Mehta top-scoring for her team with a lively 23 off 17 balls featuring 3 fours, but Frankie Nicklin turned the match on its head in a sensational spell. Nicklin clean bowled Mehta at 32/2 in the 5th over, ending her resistance.
Just two balls later, Nicklin combined with Maitlan Brown to dismiss Mair for 3 off 5 following a 1-run partnership off 2 balls. Before the over ended, Nicklin castled ACT skipper Grace Lyons for 1 off 2 after a brief 1-run stand off 3 balls with Rachel Carroll, leaving ACT reeling at 34/4. Rachel Carroll attempted a rebuild alongside Zoe Cooke, adding 15 runs off 9 balls for the fifth wicket before Courtney Sippel got Carroll caught by Lauren Kua for 16 off 11 balls with 2 fours at 49/5.
Maitlan Brown then returned to claim her second wicket, removing Cooke for 2 off 4 after a 17-run sixth-wicket partnership off 9 balls. Angelina Genford produced a heroic late attempt, striking an unbeaten 20 off just 10 balls with 3 boundaries. She added 11 runs off 6 balls for the seventh wicket with Amber Smith, who was out for 0 off 1, but Sarah Coyte clean bowled Smith on the final ball of the match. ACT Women finished their 9 overs at 77/7, falling just short of their revised target.
The Sixers bowlers performed collectively as a unit, with Frankie Nicklin starring as the star performer by claiming 3/7 in 2 overs. Maitlan Brown picked up 2/22 in 2 overs, while Courtney Sippel with 1/14 in 2 overs and Sarah Coyte with 1/22 in 2 overs chipped in with crucial breakthroughs. Captain Erin Burns also contributed with an over yielding 0/9. With this hard-fought win, the Sydney Sixers Women kicked off their T20 Spring Challenge campaign on a triumphant note.
