The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that India will host the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027, with the landmark six-team tournament scheduled to take place in Mumbai and Vadodara from 14 to 28 February.
The Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will stage the competition, which will feature Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The tournament will introduce a new high-profile platform to the women’s international calendar, bringing together six of the leading teams in the world in a concise, high-intensity T20 format. The participating sides qualified according to their positions in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings on the 6 July qualification cut-off date.
The six teams will compete in a round-robin league, ensuring that every side faces each of its opponents during the group phase. The top two teams will then advance to the final on 28 February, where the first-ever ICC Women’s Champions Trophy champion will be crowned.
India’s selection as host comes after the event was moved from Sri Lanka, which had originally been scheduled to stage the tournament. Sri Lanka Cricket is continuing to undertake the requisite reforms outlined at the ICC Annual Conference in July amid ongoing governance issues. The ICC subsequently assessed Bangladesh, India and South Africa against its established host evaluation criteria before recommending India as the replacement host. The decision was ratified by the ICC Board on 2 September.
For India, the hosting rights represent another significant step in the country’s expanding role in women’s cricket. Mumbai’s historic CCI ground will provide a prestigious setting for the competition, while the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will add a second venue with growing importance in the Indian women’s game. Together, the two cities are expected to offer a blend of tradition, visibility and modern tournament infrastructure.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the event as a defining moment for the sport. “The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket,” Shah said. “As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition, while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage.”
He added that the tournament would contribute to a more consistent rhythm for the women’s game. “With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world,” Shah said.
The announcement arrives during the ongoing sixth edition of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup, being hosted by the United Arab Emirates for the first time from 28 August to 13 September 2026. With the Asia Cup currently spotlighting the depth and competitiveness of women’s cricket across the continent, the confirmation of India as the 2027 Champions Trophy host further strengthens the sport’s expanding global calendar.
