The leadership position of Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has come under scrutiny after her former wife, Monica Wright, called for her removal from Australia’s vice-captaincy and other leadership roles.

Wright, 30, broke her silence following the collapse of her seven-month marriage to Gardner. The couple, who began dating in 2020, proposed to each other in April 2024 and married in a rustic Blue Mountains ceremony in April 2025. Wright suggested the issue might have attracted a stronger response had it involved players from the men’s team, asking why “the same standards” were not being applied.
Cricket Australia rejected the suggestion that it had ignored the matter. “Cricket Australia ensures all relationships within our workforce comply with our Respect at Work policy,” the governing body said, adding that conflict-of-interest arrangements could be introduced to protect team processes and leadership responsibilities. It did not confirm whether Gardner’s positions were under formal review, instead maintaining that the breakdown of the marriage was a personal matter.
The allegations have placed Australia’s leadership culture under an uncomfortable spotlight. Australia, led by former captain Alyssa Healy, had topped the league stage of the 13th ICC Women’s ODI World Cup with 13 points from seven matches, including six wins and one washout. Yet their campaign ended in a five-wicket semi-final defeat to India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, on October 30, 2025. India later won the title by defeating South Africa, captained by Laura Wolvaardt, by 52 runs in the final at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on November 5.
For now, Gardner’s cricket continues to command attention, but the questions surrounding trust, accountability and leadership are unlikely to disappear.
