Cricket Australia Unveils WNCL 2026-27 Schedule with Record Day-Night Matches

Australia’s premier domestic 50-over competition will return on September 29 with a greater emphasis on day-night cricket after Cricket Australia unveiled the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) schedule for the 2026-27 season.

The upcoming campaign will feature at least 16 day-night matches, twice as many as last season, as Cricket Australia looks to better prepare players for international cricket, where most white-ball fixtures are played under lights. The opening round is expected to include several members of Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning squad before the national side begins its home summer with an ODI series against Bangladesh in October.

Despite the increase in night fixtures, the WNCL calendar continues to be shaped by an increasingly busy international schedule. After the opening round, the competition will pause until December as players move into the T20 Spring Challenge, the WBBL, international assignments and overseas franchise commitments before the tournament resumes after Christmas.

Australia A’s tour of India in September has also complicated the scheduling, with the four-day match overlapping with the opening round of the WNCL. Players selected only for the white-ball leg are expected to return in time, while those involved in the longer-format fixture are likely to miss the domestic opener.

Cricket Australia’s Head of Scheduling Peter Roach admitted balancing domestic cricket with the growing number of international commitments has become increasingly difficult. “It’s a growing challenge that we’ve got more A cricket and international cricket being played across the breadth of our summer.”

Roach said the changing landscape means Australia’s leading players are now spending far more time representing the national side than they once did, leaving domestic teams to adjust to their absence. “As the years go by, it’s becoming a little bit more like the men were finding opportunities for them to compete in domestic cricket – where it used to be the norm and used to be unusual for them not to be playing, now it’s probably the opposite.”

One of the biggest changes this season is the increase in day-night fixtures. Victoria will stage all of its home matches under lights following the installation of floodlights at Junction Oval, while Cricket Australia is also exploring the possibility of adding more night games in Queensland and Tasmania. Cricket NSW is meanwhile working towards completing lighting upgrades at Cricket Central, opening the door for future evening fixtures there as well.

Roach said the expanded schedule is part of Cricket Australia’s long-term high-performance strategy, with players gaining valuable experience in conditions similar to those encountered at international level. “This is a competition that we use… ideally to prepare players to perform well in international cricket, and we know that the big games in international cricket are generally day-night in one-day cricket, or night games in T20. Giving players the opportunities wherever we can to play night cricket is an absolute priority.”

The seven-round competition will conclude with the WNCL final on March 20, 2027. While Australia’s expanding international calendar continues to reduce opportunities for its leading players to feature in domestic cricket, Cricket Australia believes the record number of day-night matches will strengthen the pathway for emerging talent and ensure the WNCL remains the country’s premier 50-over women’s competition.
