Sophie Molineux Opens Up on Captaincy Journey After Australia’s 7th Women’s T20 World Cup Win

Australia captain Sophie Molineux said believing in herself and her teammates helped her lead Australia to a record seventh ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title after a memorable victory over England at Lord’s.

Australia defeated the hosts by seven wickets in the final on July 5, 2026 (Sunday) to complete a perfect tournament, winning all seven of their matches. It was Molineux’s first ICC event as Australia’s full-time captain after taking over from Alyssa Healy earlier this year.

The captaincy change came after Australia were knocked out by India in the semi-finals of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. It also meant Australia finished that tournament without an ICC trophy, something that had become very unusual for one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket.

When Molineux was chosen as Australia’s new captain, some people questioned the decision because injuries had affected her career for many years. However, she answered those questions in the best possible way by leading Australia to another world title.

The left-arm spinner also enjoyed an excellent tournament with the ball. She finished as Australia’s leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets in seven matches and played an important role throughout the competition.

Speaking after Australia’s title-winning performance, Molineux described the moment as one of the best days of her career. “It’s been the most amazing day. To have walked away with a World Cup under our arms in front of nearly 30,000 here at the Lords, it was an incredibly special day,”

The 28-year-old admitted the beginning of her captaincy was not easy. Soon after taking over, she suffered another injury, making it a difficult start to her new role.

“I think when I took over (the captaincy), I was a bit messy at the start, to be fair. Captaining a couple of games and getting injured, shock. I suppose there were a few doubts internally and a few doubts externally. But I think what maybe I’ve learnt over my journey so far is that you just have to keep believing.

“I’m incredibly lucky that people believed in me, and I suppose I believe in this team and this group more than anything as well. It’s really satisfying. When I did miss those games at the start of the summer after just being announced captain, it probably made me feel like it might not work out.

“But I just think I’m so incredibly lucky with the support I’ve had over the last, not only just the last six months, but it’s been 10 years in this team for Australia.”

Australia looked like the strongest team throughout the tournament. Different players stepped up in different matches, showing the depth and quality in the squad.

Experienced players such as Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry once again made important contributions, while younger players including Lucy Hamilton also impressed whenever they got the chance.

Australia comfortably defeated West Indies in the semi-final before producing another complete performance against England in the final to lift the trophy.

Although Australia are celebrating another world title, Molineux said the team is already thinking about improving even more. Australia will now turn their attention to future ICC events, including the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka next year and the next Women’s T20 World Cup in Pakistan in 2028. The captain believes this talented group can achieve even greater success in the years ahead.

“Look, we’re always — we’re in the business of trying to get better,” she said. “We definitely will celebrate this and it rolls on pretty quick after this. And we don’t think we’ve reached any ceilings yet as this team has got generational talent from young girls like Lucy Hamilton right to the end of the spectrum with Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney.

“I think we’re in this really beautiful spot where it’s shared and everyone wants to play for each other and committing fully to how we want to play. So yeah, long may that live.”

Winning the Women’s T20 World Cup in her first ICC tournament as captain has already made Molineux’s leadership journey special. After overcoming injuries, doubts and early challenges, she has guided Australia back to the top of world cricket.

The title also showed why Cricket Australia trusted her with the captaincy earlier this year. Molineux led from the front with both her bowling and leadership, helping Australia stay unbeaten throughout the tournament and win another world title.

With another ICC trophy now in Australia’s cabinet, Molineux and her teammates will soon turn their focus to the next challenges. But for now, the captain can enjoy a memorable achievement after guiding Australia to a record-extending seventh Women’s T20 World Cup crown at the Home of Cricket.
