Mirab Sajjad, Bowlers Guide Norway Women to 13-Run Win Over Luxembourg

After being asked to bat first, Norway stumbled early as Luxembourg’s bowlers made full use of the new ball. Opener Anushka Gorad got her side off to a brisk start with 14(10), striking two boundaries before falling to Divya Kandpal. Wicketkeeper Bijeyata Kumari managed 5(10), Ayesha Hasan scored 5(8), while Ramya Immadi was dismissed for a two-ball duck as Norway slipped to 33/4 after just 5.3 overs.

With the innings in danger of falling apart, Mirab Sajjad and Shangeerthana Raveendrakumar rebuilt patiently through the middle overs. Sajjad looked the more fluent batter, making 27(34) with two boundaries before retiring hurt in the 15th over when Norway had recovered to 92/4. Raveendrakumar anchored the innings from the other end, remaining unbeaten on 24(42) and ensuring Norway batted out their full quota of overs.

The lower order chipped in with useful contributions. Nayab Razwan scored 4(6) before falling to Shivani Sati, Vidya Viyala added 9(11) before being run out in the penultimate over, and Lopamudra struck an unbeaten 6(3) to lift Norway to 131/6 from 20 overs. A significant factor in the innings was Luxembourg’s lack of discipline, with Norway receiving 37 extras, including 27 wides and six no-balls.

Luxembourg shared the wickets among their bowlers. Divya Kandpal led the attack with figures of 2/25, dismissing Gorad and Immadi. Khusboo Kandpal returned 1/21, Jagrat Dubey claimed 1/29, while Shivani Sati impressed with an economical spell of 1/10 from two overs. Aarti Priya finished wicketless with 0/21, Siofra Lawlor conceded 8 runs from her lone over, while Sonal Sengar went for 13 runs in her only over.

Chasing 132, Luxembourg struggled to find early momentum against a disciplined Norwegian attack. Siofra Lawlor made 8(23) before Vidya Viyala struck, while Elena Gebhard scored 13(25) before she was stumped off Anushka Gorad’s bowling. Captain Aarti Priya was dismissed for 1(5) by Mirab Razwan, leaving Luxembourg in trouble at 43/3 after 10.2 overs. From there, wicketkeeper Pooja Agarwal and Khusboo Kandpal mounted a spirited fightback with an unbeaten 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Agarwal remained unbeaten on 40(43), striking five boundaries while holding the innings together. Khusboo provided valuable support with 27*(27), hitting three fours as the pair kept Luxembourg’s hopes alive until the closing overs. However, with the required run rate climbing steadily, Luxembourg were unable to find the acceleration they needed and eventually finished on 118/3, falling 13 runs short despite the unbeaten partnership. Like Norway, they also benefited from a generous number of extras, receiving 29 runs, including 24 wides.

Norway’s bowling effort was built on collective discipline rather than individual brilliance. Vidya Viyala produced the standout spell, finishing with 1/5 from two overs. Mirab Razwan picked up 1/20, while Anushka Gorad returned 1/18. Alina Aslam bowled economically for figures of 0/13 from three overs, Nayab Razwan finished with 0/22, Ramya Immadi conceded 29 runs from her four overs, and Lopamudra completed the attack with figures of 0/9 from her lone over.

Having recovered from 33/4 through crucial knocks from Sajjad and Raveendrakumar before producing a disciplined bowling performance, Norway secured the first points of the tournament. Luxembourg showed resilience through the unbeaten stand between Agarwal and Khusboo Kandpal, but an expensive extras column and the inability to capitalise after being set ultimately proved costly.
