Southern Brave have made a massive statement ahead of the upcoming season of the Women’s Hundred 2026, officially appointing Australian national captain, all-rounder Sophie Molineux as their new captain.

The announcement, which was shared on the team’s official social media channels, marks an exciting new era for the Southampton-based franchise. Molineux takes over the reins with a reputation as a fierce competitor and a tactically astute leader, bringing a wealth of international and domestic experience to a side that has consistently been among the heavyweights of the competition.
The left-arm spinner’s credentials in the shortest format of the game speak for themselves. Molineux has been a vital cog in the Australian national setup, featuring in 48 Women’s T20 Internationals (WT20Is).
Across 45 innings, she has sent down 921 balls, picking up 51 wickets at an exceptional average of 17.72 and a striking economy rate of just 5.88. Her ability to choke runs in the powerplay and break crucial partnerships is further highlighted by her best bowling figures of 4/16, alongside a sharp strike rate of 18.0.
While she is widely known for her exploits in green and gold, Molineux is no stranger to the unique pressures of cricket in the United Kingdom. She previously turned out for Birmingham Phoenix (BP-W) in the Women’s 100. In her 6 appearances during that stint, she bowled 112 balls, conceding 109 runs while claiming 5 wickets.
With an impressive economy rate of 5.83 in the competition and best figures of 2/11, she proved how quickly she could adapt to the 100-ball format, a trait that will undoubtedly serve Southern Brave well.
Beyond her international and English domestic numbers, Molineux’s appointment brings proven leadership pedigree to the Brave dugout. Having captained the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and played an integral role in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s title-winning run in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), she understands what it takes to manage high-pressure environments and star-studded dressing rooms.
In RCB’s title-winning campaign, she claimed 12 wickets from 10 games, including a match-winning 3/20 in the final. In the WBBL, she has claimed 97 wickets from 107 innings. Her tactical flexibility and calm demeanor under the pump make her an ideal choice to lead the Brave’s charge.
Management and fans alike will be eager to see how Molineux shapes the team strategy as they build towards the trophy. With her sharp bowling, handy lower-order batting, and sharp cricketing brain, the 26-year-old Victorian is perfectly placed to get the best out of Southern Brave’s domestic and overseas talent. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on the Rose Bowl to see if Molineux can guide her new squad to ultimate glory.
