Ellyse Perry Creates T20 World Cup History, Then Says She’s Still Not Happy with Her Game

Australia star Ellyse Perry has added another achievement to her remarkable career after creating history at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The experienced all-rounder became the first Australian woman to score a half-century and take two wickets in the same Women’s T20 World Cup match. Despite the milestone and her match-winning performance, Perry says she is still looking for ways to improve her game.

Australia continued their impressive run in the tournament with a dominant victory over Pakistan at Headingley. Perry was at the centre of the win, producing an outstanding performance with both bat and ball to help her side maintain their unbeaten record.

Batting first, Australia put together another strong total. Perry played one of the finest T20 World Cup innings of her career, scoring 71 runs. It was her highest score in the Women’s T20 World Cup and also the first half-century she has ever scored in the competition.

Her innings came at an important time for Australia and helped the team reach a challenging total of 199/7 from their 20 overs. Perry mixed smart shot selection with aggressive stroke play and ensured Australia kept the scoreboard moving throughout the innings.

She was not finished there. After making a major contribution with the bat, Perry also played a key role with the ball. The veteran all-rounder picked up 2 wickets for 19 runs as Australia completely outplayed Pakistan.

Pakistan struggled against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack and were eventually bowled out for just 86 runs in 13.4 overs. Australia sealed a massive 113-run victory, one of the biggest wins in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

The victory was Australia’s fourth straight win of the tournament and strengthened their position at the top of the group standings. It also highlighted the depth and balance in the Australian squad, with different players stepping up throughout the competition.

For Perry personally, the performance was another reminder of her importance to the Australian side. The 35-year-old has enjoyed a strong return in the T20 format after facing challenges earlier in her career. During parts of 2021 and 2022, she was not always a regular member of Australia’s T20 team as the side looked at different combinations and younger players.

However, Perry continued working on her game and gradually re-established herself as one of the team’s most valuable players. Her performances over the past year have shown that she remains a major force in world cricket.

Reflecting on her journey in the format, Perry admitted that T20 cricket has taken time for her to fully understand and develop.

“The format’s probably been one that I’ve taken a while to kind of develop and really find the way that I want to play the game and contribute best to the group consistently,” Perry said.

Even after producing a record-breaking performance, Perry revealed that she is not completely satisfied and believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“I’m probably not happy with it, I’d love to keep evolving and developing. One of the things I love most about playing sport is the constant challenge of getting better. Sometimes that’s physical, sometimes that’s expanding your mind.

“I think we’re just really enjoying (the tournament), to be honest. Every game has been a different challenge…but like in any tournament, it really matters how you finish.”

Those comments reflect the mindset that has helped Perry stay at the highest level for so many years. Despite already being regarded as one of the greatest women’s cricketers of all time, she continues to search for ways to improve and contribute more to her team.

Australia have looked like the strongest team in the competition so far, winning all four of their matches comfortably. Their batting line-up has consistently produced big scores, while the bowling attack has regularly put opposition teams under pressure.

Perry’s latest performance will give Australia even more confidence as they move closer to the knockout stage. Her ability to contribute in both departments makes her one of the most dangerous players in world cricket.

While she may never be fully satisfied with her game, Perry’s constant desire to improve is one of the reasons she continues to achieve new milestones. As Australia chase another Women’s T20 World Cup title, her experience, form and leadership could prove crucial in the matches that matter most.
