Minnu Mani, G Kamalini Lead as India A Women Outclass England A in Series Opener

The India A Women’s tour of England kicked off in fantastic fashion at Northampton on June 20, 2026, as the visitors registered a commanding 5-wicket victory over England A Women in the opening T20 match.

A highly disciplined performance by the Indian bowling unit, spearheaded by Minnu Mani’s three-wicket haul, restricted the hosts to a modest total of 126/7 in their allotted 20 overs. India A chased down the target with relative ease, reaching 127/5 in just 18.1 overs, wrapping up the game with 11 balls to spare. It was a thoroughly professional display that set a perfect tone for the rest of the bilateral series.

Choosing to bowl first, the Indian bowlers immediately put England A on the back foot. Opening bowler Saima Thakor struck gold in the very first over, dismissing the dangerous Grace Scrivens for a duck. The hosts simply could not find any momentum early on, as Jintimani Kalita removed Ella McCaughan for 6, and Shabnam Shakil got rid of the captain Kira Chathli for just 1. Left reeling at a precarious position in the Powerplay, England A desperately needed someone to anchor the innings and arrest the slide.

That rescue act came from middle-order batter Jodi Grewcock, who played a superb, lonely hand. Grewcock fought valiantly against a relentless Indian attack, scoring an unbeaten 54 off 47 deliveries, a gritty knock punctuated by 5 boundaries. She found momentary allies in Emma Jones, who made a crucial 26 off 24 balls, and Ryana MacDonald-Gay, who chipped in with a quick-fire 17.

However, regular interventions from Minnu Mani completely halted England’s progress in the middle and death overs. Mani turned the screws tightly, returning phenomenal figures of 3 for 21 in her 4 overs to keep the final score restricted to 126. Saima Thakor also finished strong, picking up 2 for 32.

Chasing a modest target of 127, India A faced an early stutter when opener Deeya Yadav was dismissed by Ryana MacDonald-Gay for just 6 runs. However, Dinesh Vrinda quickly took control of the chase, hitting a brisk 32 off 24 balls with 5 boundaries to keep the required run rate well under control.

She was well-supported by Purvaja Verlekar, who played a steady innings of 23 off 27 balls. Although Sophia Smale managed to extract some turn and fight back for England A by picking up 2 wickets for 23 runs, India’s target was always within comfortable striking distance.

The final seal on the match was comfortably applied by wicketkeeper-batter Gunalan Kamalini, who walked in and shifted gears effortlessly. Kamalini remained unbeaten on 35 off just 24 balls, playing at a crisp strike rate of 145.83 to deflate any remaining hopes for the hosts.

Alongside skipper Anushka Sharma, who contributed a calm 17, and Mani, who hit the winning runs, India A crossed the finish line in the 19th over. Despite MacDonald-Gay’s best efforts with the ball (2/28), England A simply did not have enough runs on the board to challenge a deep and confident Indian batting lineup.
