Fans React as Darcey Carter’s Unbeaten 72 Not Enough as Scotland Women Fall to New Zealand

The match began with Scotland’s Darcey Carter producing one of the finest innings of the tournament. Opening the batting, Carter remained unbeaten on 72*(52), striking eight fours and a six while carrying her bat through the innings. She shared a 51-run opening stand with Katherine Fraser and later found support from Sarah Bryce, who contributed 25(22). Scotland reached 45/0 in the powerplay and appeared set for a much bigger total.

However, New Zealand’s bowlers dragged themselves back into the contest through the middle overs. Captain Melie Kerr starred with 3/17 from four overs, while Sophie Devine claimed 2/19 and Nensi Patel added 1/25. Regular wickets prevented Scotland from capitalising on their strong start as they finished on 131/7.

The chase got off to a shaky start for New Zealand. Kathryn Bryce removed Melie Kerr for 2(6) and Isabella Gaze for 16(17), while Rachel Slater dismissed Sophie Devine for 1(4), leaving the White Ferns struggling at 26/3 inside the powerplay. With Scotland sensing an upset, Sharp and Brooke Halliday combined to rescue New Zealand’s innings. The pair steadied the chase before gradually taking control, adding a match-defining 101 runs for the fourth wicket. Sharp led the recovery with a brilliant 62(43), mixing sensible strike rotation with timely boundaries.

She reached her half-century from just 38 balls and kept the required rate firmly under control. Halliday provided valuable support with an unbeaten 41*(38), ensuring New Zealand never lost momentum after the early setbacks. Although Slater eventually removed Sharp late in the chase, the result was effectively secured by then. Halliday remained unbeaten and Maddy Green finished the job with a boundary as New Zealand reached 132/4 with 10 balls to spare.

Scotland will take heart from Carter’s outstanding 72*(52), an innings that accounted for more than half of her team’s total and kept them competitive throughout the contest. Bryce (2/13) and Slater (2/22) also gave Scotland genuine hope with the ball after reducing New Zealand to 26/3 inside the powerplay. However, New Zealand’s composure under pressure ultimately made the difference.

Kerr’s influential spell of 3/17 prevented Scotland from posting a bigger total, while Sharp and Halliday’s partnership ensured the White Ferns completed a successful recovery to secure a crucial six-wicket victory and keep their semi-finals hope alive.
