England All-Rounder Dani Gibson Eyes Big Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Return After Injury-Hit Year

Dani Gibson’s return to international cricket has already begun to justify the excitement surrounding one of England’s most promising all-rounders, with the 23-year-old determined to make a major impact during a crucial World Cup year.

After spending more than a year away from England duty because of multiple injuries, Gibson returned to the national side during the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this month. Her comeback came soon after she became the most expensive English women’s player in The Hundred auction, securing a record-breaking £190,000 deal with Sunrisers Leeds.

The all-rounder’s return has been built on a strong domestic campaign in the 2026 Women’s One-Day Cup, where she emerged as one of the competition’s standout performers with both bat and ball. Representing Somerset, Gibson produced several explosive innings that reinforced her reputation as one of the most dangerous middle-order players in the women’s game. One of her finest performances came against Surrey, where she hammered 77 from just 37 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes at a strike rate above 208.

She followed that with another match-winning contribution against Lancashire, scoring 60 off 47 balls with eight boundaries and two sixes during a successful chase. Her consistency throughout the domestic season strengthened England’s belief that she could play an important role during the home summer, especially with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaching.

Gibson’s comeback against New Zealand in Durham marked her first England appearance since March 2025 and represented the end of a long rehabilitation process filled with uncertainty and setbacks. Despite rain disrupting the second ODI, Gibson still made an encouraging return, including an unbeaten 19 in the opening match. “It was a special moment. I think it’s been obviously a tough period with my injuries,” Gibson said while reflecting on her return to international cricket.

The Surrey-born all-rounder admitted the recovery process had been physically and mentally demanding, particularly after repeated injuries interrupted her momentum over the past year. “(It was) just great to be back out there and have all the hard work that’s been put in from me, the science and medical team to get me back out there on the pitch as the all-rounder that I want to be,” she said.

England continue to view Gibson as an important all-round option because of her versatility and aggressive style of play. Despite being only 23, she already has experience in 22 T20 internationals and is regarded as one of the squad’s most dynamic finishers.

Her attacking mindset was visible during her comeback innings against New Zealand, where she scored at a strike rate of 100 while helping England finish strongly. She also made an impact with the ball by dismissing New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr to claim her maiden ODI wicket. That breakthrough came during a dramatic collapse from New Zealand, with England taking the final seven wickets for just 63 runs to seize control of the match.

Throughout her rehabilitation, Gibson focused on taking gradual steps rather than rushing her recovery, a process she said helped her stay mentally positive during difficult periods away from the game. “I think it was just trying to really take it step by step and celebrate each little milestone, however small it might be, I’m just really happy to be fully fit and just be with the team. It’s going to be an exciting summer,” she added.

Now fully fit again, Gibson believes England are entering an exciting phase ahead of the World Cup after productive preparation camps and strong conversations within the group over recent months. “I’ve been out of it for a while, so it’s just nice to be back. Everyone seems in a really good place. We’ve had some really good time together over the last week, had some good conversations, some good periods of training together in the winter. I think the teams in a really good space – it should be a good summer.”

With England preparing for a home World Cup campaign, Gibson’s return adds further depth and balance to an already talented squad. If her domestic form and early signs during her comeback are any indication, the all-rounder could become one of England’s most influential players during the months ahead.
