Malaysia and Hong Kong registered a comprehensive victory on the opening day of the Hong Kong Tri-series 2026. Nur Qalysha provided the early breakthrough by dismissing Jiaping Li in the 4th over of the innings, after skipper Winifred Duraisingam won the toss and opted to bowl first. Tight lines and lengths built enough pressure, reducing them to 21/3 in the 8th over of the innings.

Wang Huiying (24 off 18 balls) joined skipper Mingyue Zhu (25 off 31 balls) at the crease, and the duo led the recovery with a 46-run partnership for the 4th wicket, which took them past the 50-run mark. Mas Elysa broke the stand by sending Wang Huiying back to the pavilion in the 13th over of the innings, providing the much-needed 4th breakthrough for Malaysia.

The wheels came off the Chinese innings as they were bundled out for 85 in the 19th over of the innings, losing their last 6 wickets for just 18 runs. The innings had as many as 9 extras. Nur Qalysha (4-1-8-2), Aisya Eleesa (3.2-0-9-2), Mas Elysa (4-0-17-2), and Nur Daniya Syuhada (4-0-18-1) were the top performers with the ball for Malaysia.

Despite a lowish total on the board, the Chinese bowlers didn’t let their guard down in their defence. The Malaysian openers, Nur Qaireen and Dhanusree Muhunan, got their side off to a steady start with a 27-run opening stand. Zhao Yihan broke the stand by sending Dhanusree Muhunan (15 off 21 balls) back to the pavilion in the 8th over of the innings, providing a crucial first breakthrough for China.

The breakthrough provided just the kind of sniff the Chinese bowlers were looking for. The bowlers pounced on the opening, chipping away with regular wickets, reducing Malaysia to 52/6 in the 13th over of the innings. Nur Qalysha (14 off 20 balls) joined skipper Winifred Duraisingam (15 off 22 balls) at the crease, and the pair took them to the brink of a memorable win, with a crucial 28-run partnership for the 7th wicket.

The Malaysian batters eventually bottled the run chase as they just managed to level the scores at 85/8 in their quota of 20 overs. The game went down to a super over. Batting first, Malaysia managed to score 8 runs for the loss of one wicket in the form of a run-out. The Chinese batters shot down the 9-run target in just four deliveries. Cai Yuzhi (4-0-14-3), Ma Ruike (4-0-10-1), and skipper Mingyue Zhu (4-0-17-0) were the top performers with the ball for China. Wang Huiying (2-0-9-1) and Zhao Yihan (2-0-9-1) played their part with the ball for their side.

Cai Yuzhi (4-0-14-3) was awarded the Player of the Match for her decisive spell with the ball for China under pressure, playing a crucial role as China registered their first win of the ongoing Tri-series.
