Shreyanka Patil, Kranti Gaud and Sree Charani Set for T20 World Cup Debut

The announcement of India’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has generated immense buzz, not only because of the experienced core led by Harmanpreet Kaur but also due to the inclusion of several World Cup debutants who represent the next generation of Indian women’s cricket. With senior figures like Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, and Jemimah Rodrigues providing stability, the squad reflects a balanced mix of youth and experience. However, it is the debutant players who have earned their spots through consistent domestic performances and impactful Women’s Premier League (WPL) campaigns, who could define India’s fortunes in the tournament.

Among the most exciting debutants is Shreyanka Patil, whose rapid rise has been nothing short of remarkable. In T20 Internationals, Shreyanka has already made a mark with her wicket-taking ability, picking up crucial 28 breakthroughs at an economy rate hovering around 7.04 runs per over, an impressive figure in modern T20 cricket. Shreyanka had a successful series in Australia as well as South Africa, as she took 8 wickets combined in 6 matches. Her standout performances in the WPL further strengthen her credentials; she finished as one of the leading wicket-takers in the 2026 season, claiming 11 wickets in just 9 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore, also winning 2nd title for RCB. Her ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, combined with her handy lower-order batting, makes her a genuine match-winner and a key debutant to watch.

Another fresh face in the squad is Kranti Goud, who has been rewarded for her consistent performances in domestic cricket. Known for her disciplined seam bowling, Kranti has been a standout performer in India’s domestic T20 competitions, regularly picking up wickets in the powerplay. She was also crucial for India in winning their first ICC World Cup in 2025. She picked 9 wickets in the tournament. In WT20Is, she has picked up 4 wickets, highlighting her potential to emerge as a disciplined bowler in the future. Though she hasn’t had a major WPL breakthrough yet, picking up 9 wickets with the best figures of 4/25, her inclusion signals India’s intent to groom a new generation of fast bowlers capable of delivering on the global stage.

Shree Charani is another debutant who has earned her place through sheer consistency. A dependable bowler for India in recent times, Charani has picked up 24 wickets in 17 innings along with best figures of 4/12 at an average close to 19 and strike rate 15.7, showcasing her ability to anchor innings. In the WPL, she has claimed 18 wickets in 12 innings. Her selection reflects the team management’s trust in technically sound batters who can adapt to different match situations.

The inclusion of Nandani Sharma adds further depth to the squad. A Bowler with the ability to influence games with the ball, Nandani has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket. Her WPL performance played a major role in her inclusion. She claimed 17 this season with the best figures of 5/33. Although her WPL opportunities have been limited, her bowling skill set makes her a valuable asset, especially in conditions that demand flexibility.

Bharti Fulmali is also set to make her debut. Making her debut in recent completed T20I series against South Africa, scoring 65 runs in 4 innings.
While focusing on debutants, it is important to recognise how the presence of established players enhances their potential impact. Richa Ghosh, one of India’s most explosive wicketkeeper-batters, boasts over 1235 T20I runs at a strike rate exceeding 144. In the WPL, she has been equally impressive, scoring over 814 runs with a strike rate above 151, often finishing games in style. Similarly, Shafali Verma brings aggressive intent at the top, having amassed more than 2687 T20I runs at a strike rate close to 142, alongside a stellar WPL season where she scored over 300 runs and played a crucial role in her franchise’s success.

The bowling unit, led by experienced names like Renuka Singh and Radha Yadav, provides the perfect environment for debutants to thrive. Renuka, with over 68 T20I wickets at an economy rate under 7, has been India’s go-to powerplay bowler, while Radha’s left-arm spin has yielded more than 103T20I wickets, making her one of India’s most reliable options in the middle overs. Their experience will be crucial in guiding the younger bowlers through high-pressure World Cup encounters.

The role of the WPL in shaping these debutants cannot be overstated. The league has provided a platform for young Indian players to compete alongside and against some of the best in the world, accelerating their development and preparing them for the intensity of international cricket. Players like Shreyanka Patil have directly benefited from this exposure, translating their franchise success into international opportunities.

As India heads into the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on how these debutants perform on the biggest stage. Their domestic consistency, backed by impressive statistics and valuable WPL experience, suggests that they are more than ready for the challenge. If they can rise to the occasion and complement the experienced core, India will not only be competitive but could emerge as a serious title contender. The blend of youth, talent, and proven performers makes this squad one of the most exciting in recent times, and the journey of these World Cup debutants will be a story worth following closely.
