Nat Sciver-Brunt’s World Cup Squad Swap Domestic Matches for British Army Training Camp

In a bold move to sharpen their edge ahead of hosting the 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from 12 June to 5 July 2026, England’s squad, led by skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt and the first team to announce their 15-member lineup on 28 April 2026, will skip this weekend’s domestic matches at the ECB Women’s One Day Cup for a high-stakes camp with the British Army.

The programme, at an undisclosed UK location, zeroes in on decision-making, resilience, and the ability to deliver under extreme pressure, kicking off just a week before their white-ball summer opener against New Zealand on 10 May.

England’s packed itinerary underscores the camp’s timing. They host Sophie Devine’s New Zealand, now led by Amelia Kerr, for a three-match ODI series from 10 to 18 May, followed by three T20Is until 25 May. Then comes a three-match T20I series against India from 28 May to 2 June, capped by a one-off Test at Lord’s from 10 to 13 July. Their World Cup campaign launches against Sri Lanka on 12 June, at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from 11 PM IST, with home advantage amplifying the stakes.

This isn’t uncharted territory for English cricket. Under Charlotte Edwards, the team has leaned into intra-squad camps this winter, bypassing internationals and skipping a recent domestic 50-over round to focus on T20 skills work. With the squad convening on Thursday in Chester-le-Street, Wednesday’s domestic T20s look set to proceed without them too.

England and Wales Cricket Board managing director of women’s cricket Clare Connor hailed the opportunity: “We are extremely lucky to be able to send our newly selected World Cup squad into one of the best high-performance environments in the world. I’m confident that what the players will experience and learn over the next few days will be priceless when it comes to performing in some of the pressure moments that a home World Cup will undoubtedly bring.”

The camp arrives amid England’s quest to end a nine-year World Cup drought across formats since their triumphant 2017 home victory, defeating Mithali Raj’s India by 9 runs in the ODI World Cup final at the iconic Lord’s. Recent heartbreaks loom large: In the 13th ICC Women’s ODI World Cup (India/Sri Lanka, 30 September to 2 November 2025), Nat Sciver-Brunt’s side finished second with 11 points from seven games, five wins, one loss, one washout, only to suffer a 125-run semi-final thrashing by Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa on 29 October in Guwahati.

India, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s squad under coach Amol Muzumdar, then claimed their maiden senior ICC title, beating South Africa by 52 runs in the Navi Mumbai final on 2 November.

T20 scars run deep, too. In the 9th ICC Women’s T20 World Cup (Bangladesh/UAE 2024), Heather Knight’s England placed third in Group B with six points from four games, three wins, one loss, but exited at the league stage.

Such military-style immersion could be the reset England craves, targeting the leadership and big-moment frailties that have plagued them. As Sciver-Brunt’s group faces the British Army’s rigours, expect a squad forged tougher, ready to turn home soil into a World Cup title.
