Shafali Verma Reflects on Her 57 vs South Africa in the 2nd T20I: Could Have Contributed More

In a Kingsmead heartbreak on April 19, 2026, 22-year-old Shafali Verma lit up Durban with a blazing 57 off 38 balls, but India’s middle-order meltdown handed South Africa an emphatic 8-wicket win, pushing the Proteas 2-0 up in the five-match T20I series. The young opener, now leading India’s run charts with 91 runs at a strike rate of 156.89 and an average of 45.50, marked her 100th T20I with pride amid the pain, vowing a fiercer comeback in Wednesday’s decider at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium (9:30 PM IST).

Shafali’s knock anchored India to 147 all out, a respectable total after Laura Wolvaardt’s toss to bowl first. Pairing with Smriti Mandhana for a brisk 22-run opening stand, the vice-captain fell early for 12 off 7 to Chloe Tryon. Shafali then steadied with Jemimah Rodrigues (24-run stand) before Tryon’s double strike, then forged a crucial 53-run partnership with debutant Anushka Sharma (28 off 31). But the collapse was brutal: India lost their last 7 wickets for 48 runs, with Arundhati Reddy (14 off 14), Harmanpreet Kaur (12 off 9), Shree Charani (7* off 3), and Kranti Gaud (4 off 3) offering scraps. Tryon (3/22), Tumi Sekhukhune (3/31), Nonkululeko Mlaba (1/17), and Nadine de Klerk (1/14) choked the innings.

South Africa cruised in reply, their openers Sune Luus (57 off 46) and Wolvaardt (54 off 34) unleashing a record 106-run stand, their highest against India at home in T20Is, racing at 11 an over in the powerplay. Shreyanka Patil (2/35) struck twice, but Annerie Dercksen (12* off 7) and Tazmin Brits (20* off 17) sealed it with 17 balls to spare. Arundhati Reddy (0/27) impressed, yet Tryon nabbed Player of the Match.

Post-match, Shafali dissected her game plan with trademark candour, “In the beginning, I got a very good start. Then I was just thinking to go grounded, take one run at a time. And then whenever I get a loose ball, I will go for that. I just saw the scorecard, and I just thought I would get that over cover. But that was a mis-timed shot, and then I got out. I could’ve contributed more, maybe if I could’ve stayed calm and stayed till the 18th over.” Her 7 fours and 2 sixes embodied that enterprise, yet she eyed untapped potential.

On India’s woes, echoing the 1st T20I’s 6-wicket loss despite debuts for Kashvee Gautam and Anushka, and Kranti Gaud replacing Renuka, Shafali urged unity, “We all know our strength. We will just come back hard, and we will just put our hands on each other’s shoulders, work hard and practice more. We will get back together, and we will do well, and we will come back harder.”

Fielding lapses drew no excuses, “Well, it’s not a technical issue. We have done really hard work on our fielding in terms of fitness. Giving our 100% is the only thing in our hands. Hopefully, we will come back hard and not repeat those mistakes again.”

Milestone magic softened the blow. “Yeah, playing 100 games for India, it’s a very proud feeling for myself,” she beamed, praising the Proteas before pivoting, “And talking about the team, they batted really well. And they did very well in all three departments. So I will say we will come back hard and we will give our best for the third game.”

With the series alive at Wanderers, Shafali’s fire, the 2nd highest run-scorer of the series, signals India’s resurgence. The women in blue must halt collapses to claw back in the ongoing T20I series against Laura Wolvaardt’s Proteas.
