The series kicked off at Kingsmead, Durban, where the South African skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, won the toss and opted to bowl first on 17th April (Friday). India handed a T20I debut cap to the 22-year-old all-rounder Kashvee Gautam.

Shafali, Jemimah, and Harmanpreet guide India to a competitive total

The Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana got them off to a positive start with a 46-run opening stand. The home side bounced back through Tumi Sekhukhune, removing a dangerous Shafali Verma (34 off 20 balls). Khaka followed it up by dismissing the Indian vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana (13 off 14 balls), on the penultimate ball of the powerplay. Smriti Mandhana scripted history by surpassing the former Indian men’s skipper Rohit Sharma (4,231 runs) to become the leading run-scorer for India in the T20I format.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur joined Jemimah Rodrigues at the crease, and the pair led the recovery with a spirited 71-run partnership for the 3rd wicket, the highest for India in South Africa against the Proteas in the T20I format. Tumi Sekhukhune returned and broke the stand by sending Jemimah Rodrigues (36 off 29 balls) in the 15th over of the innings, providing the 3rd breakthrough for the home side. India struggled to capitalise on the strong platform laid by the top-order as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (47* off 33 balls), just three runs short of her half-century, kept losing partners from the other end.

A handy cameo (10 off 8 balls) from the debutant Kashvee Gautam pushed the total past the 150-run mark, as the women in blue posted 157/7 in their quota of 20 overs. There were 7 extras in the innings. A brilliant display of death bowling from Ayabonga Khaka (4-0-16-3) and Tumi Sekhukhune (4-0-27-2) kept the scoring rate in check, restricting the Indian batters towards the final phase of the innings. In the spin department, Nonkululeko Mlaba (4-0-30-1) was impressive in her spell.

Laura Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen script a clinical chase

Chasing a target of 158, experienced veteran Sune Luus (13 off 7 balls) got off the blocks quickly, getting her side off to a brisk start alongside skipper Laura Wolvaardt. The introduction of spin did the trick as Shreyanka Patil cleaned up Sune Luus in the 2nd over in the run chase. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt held one end together, capitalising on the loose deliveries, forming decisive partnerships of 48 runs for the 2nd wicket alongside Tazmin Brits (10 off 13 balls), followed by a 52-run stand for the 3rd wicket alongside Annerie Dercksen, putting the home side in a comfortable position in the run chase.

Shreyanka Patil returned and got the big scalp of the opposition skipper, Laura Wolvaardt (51 off 39 balls), in the 14th over of the run chase to bring India back into the contest. The Proteas skipper registered an impressive half-century before getting dismissed. A couple of missed chances towards the back end cost the visitors dearly. Chloe Tryon (18* off 16 balls) finished things off in style with a maximum in the final over, with Annerie Dercksen (44* off 34 balls) ensuring she guides her side over the line with five balls to spare en route to their unbeaten 29-run stand for the 5th wicket.

The Proteas take a 1-0 lead in a five-match series with a 6-wicket win at Durban. The Indian spin duo of Shreyanka Patil (4-0-26-2) and Shree Charani (4-0-26-1) were the stand-out performers with the ball. Arundhati Reddy (3-0-28-1) played her part with the ball. Ayabonga Khaka (4-0-16-3) was awarded the Player of the Match.
