2nd T20I: New Zealand Women vs South Africa Women – Squads, Preview and Live Streaming Details

The series opener at Mount Maunganui was a bit of a reality check for South Africa, as New Zealand secured a dominant 80-run victory. The White Ferns posted a massive 190, fueled by a record-equalling half-century from Amelia Kerr and a career-best 63 from Georgia Plimmer. South Africa’s chase never really found its rhythm; despite a steady start from Tazmin Brits, they were dismantled by Sophie Devine’s clinical four-wicket haul, eventually stalling at just 110. It was a clinical performance from the hosts, leaving South Africa with plenty of questions to answer regarding their middle-order stability and death bowling.

Players to watch out:

Amelia Kerr

Amelia Kerr was the undisputed star of the series opener, continuing a phenomenal run of form that has now seen her match Brendon McCullum’s record for the most consecutive T20I fifties for New Zealand. Coming in after an early wicket, she stabilized the innings with a brilliant 78 off just 44 balls, anchoring a massive 146-run partnership. While she didn’t pick up a wicket with the ball this time, her four overs were incredibly tidy, conceding only 24 runs and keeping the South African batters under constant pressure.

Tazmin Brits

Tazmin showed glimpses of her trademark power at the top of the order, top-scoring for South Africa in what was a difficult chase for the visitors. She managed to grind out 29 runs from 35 deliveries, including three well-timed boundaries, before falling to a sharp delivery from Sophie Devine. Despite the early loss of her opening partner and the climbing required rate, she remained the anchor of the South African response for a significant portion of the match.

Sophie Devine

Returning to the side after a break, Sophie reminded everyone why she’s considered one of the most dangerous all-rounders in the game with a career-best bowling performance. She completely dismantled the South African lower order, finishing with incredible figures of 4 for 12 across her four overs, including three wickets in the 19th over alone. Her ability to strike at regular intervals and maintain an economy rate of just 3.00 was the final nail in the coffin for the Proteas’ chase.

Masabata Klaas

Masabata was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, providing the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing a rampaging Amelia Kerr just as she looked set for a century. She finished with respectable figures of 2 for 15 from her four overs, proving to be the most economical and effective weapon in the Proteas’ attack. Later in the day, she even added a quick-fire 6 runs off 3 balls at the very end, showing some late resistance with the bat.

Pitch:

The pitch at Seddon Park is widely regarded as one of the flattest and most batting-friendly tracks in New Zealand. While the new ball may offer some initial swing, the pitch typically provides a consistent bounce that allows batters to play their shots with confidence.
