In a gritty display of resilience amid defeat, 34-year-old Zimbabwean opener Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano became only the second player from her nation, after wicket-keeper batter Modester Mupachikwa, to surpass 2,000 international runs.

The veteran batter reached the landmark in the third ODI against New Zealand on March 11, 2026, at University Oval in Dunedin, scoring a patient 22 off 44 balls while opening alongside Mupachikwa in a daunting chase of 304. Entering the match just five runs shy of the milestone, her knock featured a couple of boundaries before Zimbabwe crumbled to 103 all out in the 28th over, suffering a 200-run defeat and a 3-0 whitewash in the ODI leg of the tour.

The white-ball series, hosted by New Zealand, led by skipper Amelia Kerr against Zimbabwe, led by Nomvelo Sibanda, ran from February 25 to March 11, 2026, encompassing three T20Is and three ODIs, both formats ending in clean sweeps for the White Ferns. Mugeri-Tiripano’s quiet contribution stood tall, underscoring her longevity in a challenging career for the African side. She scored 64 runs in three innings with the bat for her side in the series.

Since her T20I debut on January 5, 2019, against Namibia at Walvis Bay, Mugeri-Tiripano has been a pillar of Zimbabwe’s batting. In 72 T20Is, she has amassed 1,392 runs across 67 innings at a strike rate of 105.77 and an average of 24.85, including a couple of half-centuries. Her standout T20I knock arrived on April 20, 2022, against Namibia at Windhoek: a blazing 80 off 59 balls opening with Sharne Mayers, laced with 10 boundaries and two maximums. Zimbabwe posted 130/3 in 20 overs but fell short by seven wickets.

Switching to the 50-over format, her ODI debut came on April 19, 2023, against Thailand in Bangkok. Across 21 ODIs and 21 innings, she has piled up 625 runs at a strike rate of 69.91 and an impressive average of 32.89, boasting five half-centuries. Her finest ODI hour unfolded on March 24, 2024, against Papua New Guinea at Harare: an unbeaten 71* off 105 balls at No. 3 in a chase of 178, featuring nine boundaries. Retired hurt after her match-winning effort, she earned Player of the Match as Zimbabwe cruised to victory by seven wickets with 67 balls remaining.

At 34, Mugeri-Tiripano’s milestone transcends numbers; it’s a testament to perseverance in Zimbabwe women’s cricket, where resources are scarce and competition fierce. As she continues to anchor innings, her journey inspires a new generation, proving that milestones aren’t just scored; they’re forged through sheer grit.
