Former New Zealand international Kate Ebrahim has been appointed interim head coach for the tour. She brings not only international playing experience but also a strong understanding of New Zealand conditions, something that could prove crucial on this tour. She will be supported by Travor Phiri as interim assistant coach, while Debu Banik joins the squad as bowling consultant. Pamela Moyo has been named physiotherapist, and former Zimbabwe Women international Thandolwenkosi Mlilo will serve as team manager.

The changes come after the previous coaching setup, led by Walter Chawaguta, was asked to step aside following Zimbabwe Women’s disappointing performance at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2026 in Nepal earlier this year. With the team entering a new and challenging phase, Zimbabwe Cricket felt it was important to reset and move forward with fresh energy.

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni said the decision was about creating stability and renewed direction at a significant time for the team. He stressed that stepping into the ICC Women’s Championship for the first time is a milestone that demands focus, accountability and belief.

Adding an interesting layer to the story, Kate Ebrahim has strong ties to Zimbabwe cricket; she is married to former Zimbabwe international and current senior men’s assistant coach Dion Ebrahim. On the field, experienced left-arm seamer Nomvelo Sibanda has been appointed interim captain for the tour. Her experience and calm presence will be key as Zimbabwe Women face one of the toughest challenges in their cricketing journey.

The team will depart Harare this Wednesday for their maiden campaign in the 2025-2029 cycle of the ICC Women’s Championship, which serves as the qualification pathway to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2029 The tour begins with a three match T20I series at Seddon Park before moving to Dunedin for three ODIs at University of Otago Oval. The ODI matches will count towards the championship standings.
