Sri Lanka Women Announce Squad for West Indies Tour 2026; Sugandika Kumari Returns

Sri Lanka have announced a 15-member squad for their upcoming white-ball tour of West Indies, where they will compete in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) followed by three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from 20 February to 3 March 2026 at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.

The squad largely reflects continuity from their previous campaign against India in December 2025, but there are a few important changes and emerging stories within the group.

The side continues to be led by experienced all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu, whose leadership and match winning ability remain the heartbeat for Sri Lanka squad in both formats. The top order retains stability with Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama, while Imesha Dulani, Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshika de Silva add depth and flexibility through the middle.

The bowling unit continues to rely on seasoned names such as Inoka Ranaweera and Nimesha Madushani. Compared to the squad that toured India for the five match T20I series, Malsha Shehani and Shashini Gimhani have been left out. In their place come Dewmi Vihanga and Sugandika Kumari, signalling a slight reshuffle in the bowling department as Sri Lanka prepare for Caribbean conditions.

The tour also shines a light on several players who are still developing across formats. 23-year-old right-hand batter Kaushini Nuthyanganha has featured in 11 WT20Is, scoring 61 runs so far, but she is yet to make her ODI debut. Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Nimisha Madhushani has played three WT20Is and taken two wickets, and she too is awaiting her first ODI cap. Similarly, left-arm medium fast bowler Rashmika Sewwandi has appeared in three WT20Is, claiming two wickets with a best of 2/42, but has not yet debuted in ODIs.

While Dewmi Vihanga has already established herself in ODIs, she has claimed 11 wickets in 6 ODIs, including an impressive, best bowling performance of 5/43. However, she is still waiting for her first T20I appearance. With both ODI and T20I series scheduled on this tour, these emerging players will be eager to expand their opportunities and cement their places in both formats.

Sugandika Kumari’s inclusion further strengthens the spin department, which could prove crucial on slower surfaces. The selectors’ approach reflects a balance between stability and gradual transition, ensuring that experienced campaigners guide a group that also includes promising young talent. The left-arm orthodox bowler has appeared in 49 WODIs claiming 42 wickets and 88 WT20Is claiming 64 wickets.

Under Athapaththu’s leadership, Sri Lanka will look to combine experience, youth and adaptability as they take on the West Indies away from home.

Looking at their head-to-head record in ODIs, the rivalry between Sri Lanka Women and West Indies Women has been a closely contested one. Out of the 35 ODI matches played, West Indies Women have a slight edge with 18 victories, while Sri Lanka Women are not far behind with 17 victories. The statistics clearly indicate how competitive this format has been.

But the scenario is entirely different when it comes to T20Is. In 26 T20Is, West Indies Women have clearly had the upper hand in this rivalry, with 20 victories to their name compared to Sri Lanka Women with 5 victories, with one match ending in no result. The Caribbean team has clearly had more success in the shorter version of the game, indicating their strength and depth in T20 cricket, while Sri Lanka Women have struggled to keep up with them in this format.
