The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) will meet Cricket Australia (CA) to discuss cricketer Emily Smith’s ban of one year.
Emily Smith who played for Hobart Hurricanes in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) this season was handed a ban of one year, with nine months suspension for posting match details online. Smith had posted the team’s line-up against Sydney Thunder on November 2 on her Instagram an hour before it was supposed to be disclosed. Although the match was abandoned due to poor weather Smith had been ruled out of the remainder of the competition. Smith had accepted her charges but also said that she was trying to make a joke of how she was batting low in the order.
Cricket Australia has a strict anti-corruption code that doesn’t allow players to share inside information to the public which could be used in potential betting purposes.
Considering the sanction a bit harsh, the players’ union held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
As reported by Reuters, the Australian Cricketers’ Association seeks to meet Cricket Australia to discuss the sanction and process behind Smith’s one year ban.
Emily also gets support from the likes of Aussie spin legend Shane Warne who feels the sanction was harsh for her naive mistake. Former England captain Michael Vaughan also feels that the sanction is unjustified.
The Australian Cricketers’ Association will meet Cricket Australia to discuss the issue and hopefully, to lighten her sanction.
