The 20th match of ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 saw a rollercoaster first innings in the game between India and England at Indore’s Holkar Stadium. With Australia and South Africa having already qualified for the semi-finals, both India, at number four in the points table, and England, at number three, had their entire motivation riding on this match. The England team won the toss and chose to bat first, paving the way for an unforgettable innings by former captain Heather Knight. Knight made her 300th international appearance for England in this game, giving extra meaning to her contribution to one of the tournament’s most important matches.

Beginning slowly, Knight rode out the early Indian bowling, holding out against well-disciplined spells from bowlers such as Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana, who attempted to keep England in check. The surface, again typical of Indore, had good pace and bounce in the early stages but became a batting-friendly surface as the match went on.

Following this was a batting masterclass. Heather Knight scored her third ODI hundred, holding the innings together superbly. She constructed a crucial 113-run partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt, steadying England’s innings after initial wickets and building a platform for a fighting total. Knight’s knock was a mixture of class and calmness as she hit 15 fours and a six, scoring her ODI best of 109 from 91 balls with an excellent strike rate of nearly 120.

Her hundred not only arranged runs but provided England with much-needed assurance in the game. It was all about Heather Knight’s resilience and talent, a testament to her extensive experience and leadership skills. England openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones scored 22 runs and 56 runs respectively.

Then at third position came Heather Knight, her capacity to take pressure from England being 98-2 in 21.1 overs to falling at 211 in 39th over, Knight supported by Sciver-Brunt gave the crucial partnership and kept pushing the limits relentlessly keeping England’s innings front-footed despite India’s quality bowling.

Deepti Sharma led the Indian bowling charge with a strong four-wicket haul, supported by Shree Charani’s effective spin, but Knight’s innings consistently frustrated the hosts and kept England’s scoreboard ticking.

England’s eventual 288 for 8, though modestly curtailed through stringent bowling in the latter overs. Knight’s innings was the key that set up that score, significantly improving her team’s hopes of reaching the semi-final. The alliance with Sciver-Brunt was the turning point England needed to change the momentum of the game in their direction, displaying a mature batting attitude under immense pressure.

With every passing match, Heather Knight’s innings at Indore will be talked about as a day when experience clashed with opportunity in truly spectacular style. This 300th international match marked not only a milestone in her personal career but also a turning point in England’s World Cup campaign. Knight’s century reaffirmed her role as the batting cornerstone of England and an experienced player who could inspire performances at the top level.
